Some laugh out loud gags, but too many misses and groaners for my taste, and the silliness started to irritate after a while...

King Kong 4/5

Fantastic film that really didn't feel like it was 3 hours long. It just seemed to fly by. The special effects of Kong were really good, and really made me almost weep for the big ape.

The Fourth Man (1983)

Paul Verhoeven's last Dutch movie is an intriguing watch

It has a very interesting story and could well be seen as a trial run for Basic Instinct, since it features an ice-cold seductress (Renee Soutendijk) with mysterious motivations and sexual preferences. The hallucinatory tale follows a novelist (Jeroen Krabbé) first falling for her, and then feverishly investigating whether she's a serial husband killer. The film is full of what would soon be recognised as Verhoeven trademarks: a little blasphemy, a lot of nudity, dispassionate characters and hidden agendas.

Good movie.

Sorry but back to Spider-Man... did Harry not know his father was evil and was the Green Goblin?

Wouldn't he understand why he has to be done away with?

Who was the Sandman BTW? I know Venom though

When Harry finds his father dead body, the corpse is wearing the Goblin suite, so Harry definitely knows about his father's second identity.

Sandman is the guy who can turn to sand and get through doors' key holes and other tiny holes.

Wu Ji / Mo Gik / The Promise / The Master of the Crimson Armour: 5/5

Epic in every sense of the word.

We've had to endure so many average WuXia films in the last 5 years (House of flying daggers, hero, crouching tiger hidden dragon, seven swords...), needless to say I wasn't expecting much from The Promise.

This movie is like a huge Greek tragedy with martial arts and epic battle scenes.
Of course it's nowhere near as good as Legend of Zu, but it's definately the best film of the year.

BTW I fail to see why the Weinsteins have a problem with the beginning and the end. I find it just perfect.

CTHD, Hero, HOFD... average?!

I liked CTHD a lot (but whenever I talk about it, it sounds as if I didnt like it, it has obviously been done before, its a wuxia genre film), Hero and HOFD were superb.

If Harry knows his father was the Goblin, I wonder why he didnt say "Holy shit.. my father was the Green Goblin" and recognise he was evil. Of course he'd have mixed emotions as his father had died, but I thought he'd say more than "Spider-Man killed my father. He will pay!" you know?

I'm not familliar with the comic that much but I did love the animated series which kicked ass

Harry didn't find out his father was the GG til number 2 when he breaks the mirror. If you notice in the first movie Norman's corpse is brought in by Spidey wrapped in a sheet or something ... Spidey didn't want Harry to know about his Dad being GG because of the request he made just before he died.

I really enjoyed this a great finish to the trilogy ... really pulled at the heart strings being a parent and all. Park Chan Wook always does a good job of putting myself in the victims shoes.

The Myth 4/5

Thoroughly enjoyable Jackie Chan flick. Love the costumes, period locations and comedy. I don't want to get into a Dolby vs DTS arguement but that full-rate DTS was collosal. Probably the finest home cinema experience ever.

War of the Worlds (2005) 3/5

I'm kinda disappointed with this film, especially considering that the director's last few titles have been of excellent quality. The storyline wasn't too hot, I prefer ID4 with the whole alien invasion thing. The visuals wer stunning though - seamlessly combining CGI with the rough, amature looking photography.

Batman Begins 5/5

Awesome, fantastic etc..etc... Very nice to see a dark comic book film, without the camp of the Joel Schumacher efforts. I have great respect for the director and writer - an excellent combination. However, I'd like to have seen Aronofsky's take on the dark knight (sitting on a toilet with a gun to his head? eh Mordib?).

Red Dwarf VII - First 5 episodes - ****/*****

Not as bad as all that, but there's still something not quite right with the non Rimmer episodes from what I remember. Chloe Annet may be a looker, but she's all wrong for Kochanski, very annoying, too PC and basically unfunny, whereas Clare Gorgan is bubbly and sweet.

That said, I did like the episode "Duct Soup" which was a good character episode, and I also liked the "Smoked Me A Clipper" one where Rimmer becomes Ace Rimmer.

The crowning glory is "Blue" in which Lister finds he is missing Rimmer, which is quite moving in places yet also hilarious

The Rimmer Munchkin song had me in stitches

Superman: The Movie 4/5

Still a great movie despite the effects looking a bit ropey these days (although I prefer it to bad CGI such as seen in The Myth). I used to dislike Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent (i.e. bumbling idiot persona), but I can appreciate the comic and subtle skills in his performance.

Gene Hackman is excellent as Lex Luthor but I thought it was a bit too simple in the way that he uncovers Superman's weakness. I was never a big admirer of Margo(t) Kidder as Lois Lane and could never understand the acclaim she received for playing the part. I still don't think the chemistry is as good as has been suggested. I guess she doesn't do it for me.

I'm quite looking forward to what Bryan Singer has done with Superman Returns.

I liked The Myth despite some quibbles. Most disconcertingly was the sight of Jackie (looking like a 65 year old) giving lovesick eyes to the Princess, and also the dodgy cgi at the end). The indian bird was fit though, and some good fights.

Has anybody read my review of "The Myth" here in this thread? There I wrote that it is funny, that Jackie in one scene kills off more people than he did in his entire movie career.

LOL I know what you mean, in some scenes Jackie really did look his age didn't he? I agree, there were some good fights though, and as you say Samantha (Indian bird) was fit!

Oasis 5/5
If this film is anything like real life then society is predominantly filled with assholes. Therefore, I'm ashamed to be an asshole. The film's about two social outcasts who are treated like shit by everyone, because they are seen as monsters. The irony is that it is everyone else who are the real monsters. The film's quite similar to Nobody Knows in terms of giving the minoriy a voice. It allows us to realise how ignorant we truly are. Thank you Lee Chang-dong for a superb work of art.
