Crime 101 (2026) 3/5
It's too derivative to pull up any trees, but still a decent crime flick. Chris Hemsworth gives a solid performance and he's in his right element here (somewhat similar to Blackhat). The action scenes are straight to the point and fortunately there's a distinct lack of CGI. The story is okay, but there's nothing in it that I haven't seen before. I've seen some people call it a Heat knockoff though I see it more as a composite of several crime classics.
Marty Supreme (2025) 4/5
Definitely lives up to the hype. It's an enjoyable experience and it does everything a good move should do; it's suspenseful and pulls the viewer right in, tells a meaningful story without any preaching or political bullshit, and above all, it looks like an actual movie thanks to expert use of 35mm. Admittedly my first time seeing Chalamet in anything, but he's impressive and really shines here. Abel Ferrara has a cameo and he's hilarious, didn't see that coming. While I think Uncut Gems is a better movie I hope Marty Supreme can raise the bar for the Hollywood blockbuster.

Michael (2026) - 4/5
Well written and directed. Superbly acted. Covers the life of the singer until the late 1980s.
There was supposed to be a sequel but it's currently in development hell due to disagreements within the Jackson family, supposedly.

The Sheep Detectives (UK/USA/Ireland, 2026): 4/5
Every night, a shepherd (Hugh Jackman) reads mystery novels to his flock of sheep. One day, he is unexpectedly found dead, and the sheep bond together to try and solve the mystery of what happened to him.
I really enjoyed this, such an entertaining whodunnit/mystery spoof. Worth watching.

Spider-Noir - 4/5 (Prime Video series) was pretty good. Worth it alone to see Nic Cage hamming it up in later eps. Writing and characterisation is pretty solid.
The TV budget limitations show in the fights though. Sandman's powers are pretty nerfed in this incarnation and the fights are very much "street level". I.e. people being thrown around in mostly building interiors.

Backrooms (2026) - 3/5
Atmospheric film where stuff happens. Execution was good, but overall very light on plot, but that was intentional. The filmmaker did a good job expanding the concepts from his Youtube short films into a feature-length. Helpful for people going in:- the film is set in 1990, that explains all of the usage of obsolete/old tech.
One thing I noticed is that nobody carries guns, despite it being set in USA. But I suppose that might've "ruined it" a bit. Shows that characters are all just normal people who don't WTF they're getting themselves into. I think a good contrast might be computer game Silent Hill: Homecoming, where some of the scariness was reduced because the protagonist was a military vet who was competent at combat.
Obsession (2026) - 4/5
Entertaining little character acting driven film. The lead actress absolutely nails it as the yandere girlfriend. The logic of the "rules" provided for the wish granter was consistent throughout the film, a very basic thing which a lot of established writers in Hollywood tend to stuff up in the last decade because there's been so many nepo-hire talentless hacks. Kudos given to director/writer Curry Barker.
