A detailed plot description has been circulating among many Chinese newspapers lately. It indicates the story is inspired by not only classic Chinese novel Journey to the West but also Chinese folk legends about the Eight Immortals.

The story begins with Monkey King pillages the heaven and is then imprisoned by Jade Emperor, lord of the heaven. Thousands years later, in present day's New York, a 15/16 year old boy is wandering in the streets. He is small, skinny and is often beaten up by other kids. He is obsessed by Hong Kong kung fu movies and ancient Chinese folk legends, like stories from Journey to the West. One day he walks into an pawnshop, where he discovers a cudgel. The shopkeeper warns him that the cudgel contains magic power and no one shall touch it. But the boy touches it anyway and is immediately brought back to the ancient China. The cudgel is in fact the personal weapon of Monkey King and only Monkey King can help him to get back. He set up a journey to find the imprisoned Monkey King and with help from Lan Caihe, one of the Eight Immortals, the boy frees Monkey King returns the cudgel to him. Monkey King decides to accompany Tripitaka (the Tang Monk) for a journey to the west and before departing, he sends the boy back home. After the adventure, the boy has become a real fighter and has learned the true meaning of kung fu.

The rumor suggests Jet Li will play Monkey King, rather than Tripitaka as reported previously, and Jackie Chan will play Lan Caihe. Monkey King is the lead character in Journey to the West, written based on folklores. In the novel, he single handily pillages the heaven, and is imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha. Five hundred years later, he is freed by Tripitaka and as a disciple and guardian of Tripitaka, he escorts him to the west to seek Buddhist texts, with two other disciples, Pigsy and Sandy. Lan Caihe was a real person, a bagger from Tang Dynasty. In Chinese folk legend, he is described as one of the "Eight Immortals" and is often portrayed as a young boy carrying a basket of flowers.

According Chinese newspaper The Beijing News, which called the project "The Handsome Monkey King", the script is written by John Fusco (Hidalgo, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Young Guns). It is directed by Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, Stuart Little 2, The Lion King) and one of the produces is Bill Badalato (Around the World in 80 Days, Alien: Resurrection, Broken Arrow, Top Gun). Name of the young boy is "Cleo". The project is mainly financed by Beverly Hills-based Relativity Media (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Monster House, RV), produced by Casey Silver Productions (Ladder 49, Hidalgo, Gigli) and has been picked up by Universal. The Chinese co-producer, probably Shanghai Film Studios, will cover at least one sixth of the total cost (about US$60 million) and about US$7.5 million will be spent directly on the production in Shanghai.

Hollywood’s version of Journey to the West – JC and JL are only supporting actors

Since Jackie Chan revealed that he will be collaborating with Jet Li for the first time in a new movie based on Journey to the West, news about the script has been very confusing.

On 7 August, the first draft of the detailed script was revealed. Jackie Chan and Jet Li are only two big supporting actors. Jet Li is going to be the Monkey King and Jackie Chan is going to be Lan Caihe (蓝采和), a goddess of one of the eight deities. The main focus is a 15-year-old American boy, who experienced his rite of passage through his time-travelling adventure.

In the story, this 15-year-old New Yorkboy found a Golden Club (or Stick). This Golden Club brought this boy back to ancient China. The only person who could bring this boy back is Monkey King, the owner of the Golden Club. The boy then started his search for the Monkey King. After much difficulty and with the help of Lan Caihe, he finally released the Monkey King from under the Five Finger Mountain and returned the Golden Club to the original owner. The boy returned home and become more mature.

Bah, this sounds just as bad Shanghai Knights. At least neither Son Goku (the monkey king) or the monk will be anticlimactically blown up by fireworks like Donnie Yen was.

I really like Shanghai Knights btw.
It is how a good sequal should be: different.
In my eyes this is Jackie´s best Hollywood movie, because it perfectly combines comedy and action and has no boring parts at all - very entertaining.

And btw: Why do you think this sounds like Shanghai Knights? I can´t find any parallels...

Although it would be a big disappointment for a Jackie - Jet coorporation, we still could be happy if this movie reached the level of Shanghai Knights if they use such a silly plot.

I´d rather want they just shoot a commercial together than that.

How can that film not be awesome? Jack Slater enters his apartment, firing a few rounds into his wall closet. As he opens it an assassin fully masked with a gun and a rope in his hands falls out of it dead.

Pity it flopped, when it didnt deserve it. That and Cliffhanger were top action films of that time

I remember watching them back to back, I was stunned.

The Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project to Be Directed by Peter Jackson? (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

Believe it or not - according to Beijing-based Star Daily, Peter Jackson's name is mentioned as the choice of the director for the untitled Jackie Chan / Jet Li (The J&J Project). This means either Jackson has already agreed to get involved or the producers have tried talked him into it. Star Daily claims it got the news from an anonymous insider. The paper also reports Jet Li has been offered with US$9 million to play the main villain in the movie.

Rob Minkoff Got to Direct the Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project

Looks like Peter Jackson is not attached to the Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project (aka. The J&J Project). Disappointed? Relieved? According to Chinese newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily, Han Sanping, president of China Film Group, which is expected to co-produce the project, just said the movie would be directed by Rob Minkoff (The Haunted Mansion, Stuart Little 2, Stuart Little, The Lion King). The J&J Project is about a New York kid travels to the ancient China to rescue the Monkey King and to learn the true meaning of Kung Fu. This project, in which Jackie Chan and Jet Li will work together for the first time ever, It is primary a kid movie so Minkoff sounds like a perfect choice.

That's very very bad news!!! Yes, I'm looking forward to Rush Hour 3...

I really hope Jet Li can still get out of this deal. What Jackie does I dont even care about anymore as he has lost all his marbles when it comes to moviemaking...

It's a so-called 'kids-movie'. I'll tell you one thing. When I have kids I sure as hell not gonna make them watch shitty movies under the pretence that it's a 'kid-movie'. Fuck that. I'll just give them the normal Jackie/Jet/Tony Jaa stuff.
