To me Image looks alot better in the first 3, but it seems to have combing on the last one. I really liked this movie, so want to get the best version

I don't see a lot of difference really.

The Image is a fraction darker, and has fractionally stronger colour, but you'd barely notice unless comparing like this.

It's of course worth pointing out that the Image doesn't contain the original language track, so that immediately rules it out.

I'd like to see a comp for HAVE SWORD WILL TRAVEL.

Cantonese. Mind you, the remixes on the IVL DVD are AWFUL!

i assume the ivl is a pal-ntsc conversion and suffers speed up.? as the ivl runs 5 minutes shorter than the image.

All the IVL shaws are crummy conversions. Image's are NTSC speed but I'm not sure how good the visual conversion is. Will get Have Sword, Will Travel next week to decide

Hard to determine the winner as they both have faults.

You sure Image got a proper PAL>NTSC converted source?

The Image releases are PAL conversions as all of the Shaw masters were created in PAL for TV -- but Image have converted them back to NTSC speed hence the longer than IVL run time. The IVL's have the same standards conversion flaws as their DVDs are NTSC also -- although they haven't been time corrected. Some of the German DVD releases were native PAL.

Edited, so that my post hopefully makes more sense. 8)

I know Image are PAL conversions, I just wondered if it was the same as IVL (improper with ghosting, fake anamorphic and combing) :). But you've confirmed it's proper NTSC, so that's fine, what's not so fine is the lack of Cantonese and the combing (is it interlaced or progressive) - some other issues too.

IVLs have combing due to interlacing and ghosting on any display due to standards conversion flaws. They don't look very good. I think with Image we may loose the ghosting but I don't want to confuse anyone - or myself! - until I've seen one for myself

You lot been wearing Bradavon's glasses or something? Ignoring Interlacing issues, Image's release is fractionally darker and that is the only difference in those grabs. The percieved "colour difference" is down to the difference in brightness.

Aye LCD screens are a bast for DVD comparisons. Best thing to do is keep both grabs in the same space onscreen by copying the url of the images and pasting them into a new window, then use your backwards and forwards button to flip back and forth between each image.

Yeah we had a lot of discussion about LCD screens on the comparison of King Kong.

Just to clarify, it seems the Image releases are the PAL-NTSC versions stretched in NTSC speed, with the blurred frames now even more painfully evident

I've ignored the Image releases as they've all been disappointing and will continue to do so until I hear otherwise. I hope Dragon Dynasty do much better.

The thing is, there's no reason why they can't take a progressive PAL master, such as what we saw on the Australian DVDs, and convert that to an NTSC speed master. Only a moron - or the guys at Celetial - would make an NTSC speed master out of an existing PAL-NTSC conversion!
