Ta Brad. The first HD30/DVD9 combo is reportedly Fast and the Furious 3. They're still putting out HD15/DVD9 at this time, eg The Breakfast Club combo released a little after Xmas.

Also the HD-DVD addon for Xbox 360 has region free SD-DVD playback out of the box.

Warner HD-DVD news:-
At this year's Consumer Electronics Show Warner Home Video have just announced their initial Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD plans for 2007. New titles now confirmed for the format include The Departed, Happy Feet, Blood Diamond and We Are Marshall, while catalogue titles will include The Matrix franchise, all of the Harry Potter films and Oceans 11 and Oceans Twelve. Classic titles to be released in the first quarter of 2007 include Bullitt and The Getaway (1972) starring Steve McQueen. Also being released in 2007 is Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut.
Also coming to Blu-ray Disc are three titles already available on HD DVD: GoodFellas, The Dirty Dozen and Enter the Dragon.

Sorry. The drive itself is SD-DVD region free, but the SD-DVD region playback depends on the locality of where the Xbox 360 was bought - i.e. it can playback R1&4 SD-DVDs when connected to an Australasian 360.

Scarface confirmed for HD-DVD at CES2007.
Source= Xbox.com

Paramount HD-DVD news:-
Meanwhile, Paramount has indicated that it will continue releasing new release titles on HD-DVD in 2007, along with their first catalog titles, although they were also short on specifics. Babel will kick off the slate on 2/20, followed by Flags of Our Fathers, Payback: Straight-Up and Face/Off. There was also a very strong hint that Star Trek: The Original Series may debut on HD-DVD in its newly remastered and CG-enhanced form in 2007. According to the studio, additional titles will be announced throughout the year.

New Line will only be supporting the TotalHD format, so unless they can come up with HD30/BD50 discs, expect Lord of the Rings to span multiple discs.

Excellent, thanks.

I really hope that one ISN'T a TotalHD. That would be really stupid.

Great to see Face/Off too. Still virtually bare-bones no doubt

I've checked the DVD side of my "Good night, and good luck" and DVD Talk are wrong it's not single layer. It however only takes up 5.04Gb so not much more than a single layer at 4.79Gb.

The UK R2 will of course be more with the additional DTS.

Happy Feet is on a combo and the has the same extras on both sides. Brad will be thrilled bout that. ;)

On HD DVD ($39.99 SRP) the film is presented in 1080P Widescreen with English Dolby True HD 5.1, English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 EX Surround audio and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. This is a Combo release, so you get the HD DVD presentation on Side A, and the Widescreen DVD on Side B complete with extras.
Extras on the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD are identical to the standard DVD release and include:
* NEW fully animated additional sequences “Mumble meets a Blue Whale” and “A Happy Feet Moment”
* ”Dance like a Penguin: Stomp to the Beat” featurette – Take a private dance lesson with Savion Glover (the motion capture dancer for the film)
* Gia’s “Hit Me Up” Music Video
* Prince’s “The Song of the Heart” Music Video
* Classic Cartoon “I Love to Singa”

WOW, look how cheap Warner's Australasian HD-DVDs are! Considering that $30AUD is RRP of most R4 SD-DVD 2-discers.
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/mech/quicksear ... VD&x=0&y=0

The following French Studio Canal non-English language HD-DVDs have English subtitles:-
Brotherhood of the Wolf - Christophe Gans. Optimum may release this at some point.
The Army of Shadows - Jean-Pierre Melville's superb thriller chronicling the French resistance during the Nazi occupation. Rights are held by BFI in the UK, so I'm doubtful that this will be released in the UK.
La Haine - released by Optimum in the UK.

A list of HD-DVD titles not available/announced for the US. Well worth a look, some real surprising ones there - eg Spain getting a HD-DVD of Sony's Underworld Evolution.

The Prestige is coming to the UK on HD-DVD. source

He sure is. Pity he doesn't want it :D

Odd it's not a 2 disc DVD release. Right now I'm only paying attention to Combos (which are also few and far between). It's too early to pay attention to any others I'll only forget about them and of course the list would only get bigger and bigger.

I've added Happy Feet to the first post. To try and keep it up to date (of the Combos).

First post has been significantly updated. Now tries to list all combos of narrative films available/coming out, regardless of whether all the extras are on the DVD side or not.

I have observed that Warner combos have higher RRPs (by about ~$5) than Universal ones, this fact sucks.

Ditto for me. There will be standard HD-DVDs that I'll buy once I have a player, off the top of my head:- Goodfellas, Casino, 12 Monkeys, Casablanca, Unforgiven.

Brad, I recall that you asked about what codecs the studios have been using for Blu-ray, I looked it up.

David Fincher's The Game and classic Steve Martin comedy The Jerk coming to HD-DVD.
From dvdtimes:-
Universal Studios Home Video have announced their first wave of US HD DVD releases for April 2007. Arriving on the 17th are David Fincher’s The Game ($29.98 SRP) and one of Steve Martin’s early comedies The Jerk ($34.98 SRP).

The Game is presented on a 30GB Dual-Layer disc in 1080P 2.35:1 Widescreen with English and French Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround audio and English SDH and French subtitles. The sole extra is the original trailer (which matches the R1 DVD release where there is yet to be a Special Edition).

The Jerk is presented on a 15GB/9GB HD DVD Combo disc with the film presented in 1080P 1.85:1 Widescreen on Side A with English DD-P 5.1 and French DD-P 2.0 Surround audio and English SDH and French subtitles. Side B contains the standard definition version of the film complete with extras as detailed here.

Thanks. I'm not aware any other site is doing this too.

There are a couple I would pick up like Brokeback Mountain but I may as well wait now I have the DVD. It's always possible a better version will come by the time I have a use for the HD side.

I noticed that too :(

And? :D

I certainly did thanks.

Odd Goodfellas doesn't at least have a commentary on the DVD side.

La Haine is going to be Bare-bones on UK HD-DVD from Optimum right?

Even so considering the high price of the DVD Tin UE I'll wait now and pick that up. HD Quality comes before extras. If it were cheaper I'd pick it up but considering the price and I'll want to buy it again I'll pass.

The UK HD-DVD is much cheaper than the Tin UE too!

I already have the French DVD anyway.

I have an off-topic question. Does anyone know if the Lethal Weapon HD-DVDs have de-interlacing applied like Full Metal Jacket and The Fugitive? I find that just as annoying, if not more, than interlacing.

Blade Runner and The Matrix Trilogy comes to HD-DVD:

CES 2007 Coverage

Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and chairman of the HD-DVD Promotion Group, announced that more than 300 new HD-DVD titles will be released by the 41 studios supporting the camp in 2007. Titles will include top tier new releases such as The Departed, The Good Shepherd, Flags of Our Fathers, as well as catalogue behemoths such as Blade Runner, Face/Off, Ghost in the Shell, the Harry Potter films and The Matrix Trilogy. TV favourites making their way onto the high def format this year will include Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and original episodes of Star Trek, which have been digitally remastered with new special effects.

De-interlacing is where an interlaced transfer is made into a fake progressive transfer, Yes/No?

Sorry I've no idea though. Eva?

Yeah and it results into small jagged lines travelling down instead of horizontally. Mostly on black lines over white background or other way around.

Yeah some of the Warner Bros. HDs mastered from older DVDs that were 480i, like the old snap cases, are deinterlaced. It's very annoying. I'm sure they eventually remaster them but damn it sucks

From DVDTalk:

Full Metal Jacket:
"We do have a couple of issues with the disc's technical mastering, though. Warner authored this HD DVD disc from an older HD master originally transferred in 1080i format and only recently deinterlaced to 1080p in the studio. Unfortunately, at the time the master was struck, heavy vertical domain filtering was applied to reduce the appearance of aliasing and interlace artifacts on 1080i TVs. The process has the side effects of losing vertical resolution detail and introducing jagged artifacts and shimmer in diagonal lines when reassembled to 1080p or other progressive resolutions. It's still better than standard DVD, but not nearly as good as the best that High Definition can deliver, especially when combined with the movie's already soft photographic style"

The Fugitive:
"Industry insiders have revealed that Warner used an older HD master for this disc, originally transferred in 1080i format and only recently deinterlaced to 1080p in the studio. It's still better than standard DVD, but not nearly as good as the best HD DVDs. "

Oh my god that's awful. Thanks CJ.

I hope they fix that money saving tactic, as you say.
