The UK R2 IMO. I say IMO as it's suggestive, the Korean DVD is all 3 cuts.

I say the UK R2 as it's got the same extras as the HK DVD plus the extended DC in non-branching form. It does miss out on DTS though but I believe it is better quality than the HK DVD.

It's really down to HK DVD for DTS, UK R2 for extended cut and Korean DVD for all 3 cuts. The R1 is pretty much the same as the UK R2 but bare-bones.

If you prefer the HK theatrical cut to the extended cut get the HK DVD or maybe the Korean DVD.

The Korean 3 Disc is whack, my advice is to avoid it.

The subs aren't complete on the Director's Cut, certain pieces of dialogue are missing subtitles. I obtained a review copy of this which I passed onto someone else as I couldn't be assed.

As Brad says... perhaps the UK R2 but I quite like my HK R3... I don't mind the icon thing to switch from theatrical to DC.

I've only ever seen the R3HK, but I would hate to lose those great subtitles for a corrected version. The subs are unintentionally funny and it adds to the movie IMO. I just love the part near the end on the soccer field where they guy shouts "BEND OVER IT'S MY TURN!!". Classic

Hmm.. that a bit strange, because on another board, a user said the following

I watched the long version from the box last night, and was generally very pleased. It's a little thing, maybe, but it's just so damn NICE not to have to deal with that stupid "press the icon to see the extra footage!" bullshit on the HK disc.

First of all, the additional scenes in the long version are important to the film (spoilers follow... as if anyone here hasn't seen this..!) -- the singing scene gives Chow the idea for the singing monks, and the long scene with Mui really helps to set her character, which provides the emotional core of the movie.

Secondly, on the HK disc, you can watch these scenes by pressing the idiotic icon as the film plays... but often, instead of additional scenes, you'll get a few minutes of "how we did the effects for this shot!" stuff, which simply distracts you from the film. Thus, last night is the first time I've been able to see the film uninterrupted and complete. Worth the $13 or so the thing cost (at koreandvds.com) just for THAT.

In addition, the picture quality was noticeably better than the HK disc, as were the English subtitles - signs are now translated (something generally omitted on the HK disc), and we learn that Chow and Mui get married at the end, something the subs on the HK disc don't tell us. My only complaint is that it looks like they neglected to sub some of the "extended version" footage - most specifically the outtakes which immediately follow the film.

Still... it's a no-brainer... this one's well worth the money and the upgrade.

I looked at the ultimate edition today at the store, and noticed that both the Extended Cut and the International Cut are on the same disc. Are they really low bitrate or is it done with seamless branching. I want to pick up the set but not if the extended version will fit on a DVD-5.

Yeah as Brad mentioned, we're both saying the same thing - except I didn't provide specific details.

I found the missing subs remarkably annoying, especially in the 'singing' extended scene.

The pic quality seems excellent on the Korean 3 Disc but I am happy with the HK version.
