Crime 101 (2026) 3/5
It's too derivative to pull up any trees, but still a decent crime flick. Chris Hemsworth gives a solid performance and he's in his right element here (somewhat similar to Blackhat). The action scenes are straight to the point and fortunately there's a distinct lack of CGI. The story is okay, but there's nothing in it that I haven't seen before. I've seen some people call it a Heat knockoff though I see it more as a composite of several crime classics.

Marty Supreme (2025) 4/5
Definitely lives up to the hype. It's an enjoyable experience and it does everything a good move should do; it's suspenseful and pulls the viewer right in, tells a meaningful story without any preaching or political bullshit, and above all, it looks like an actual movie thanks to expert use of 35mm. Admittedly my first time seeing Chalamet in anything, but he's impressive and really shines here. Abel Ferrara has a cameo and he's hilarious, didn't see that coming. While I think Uncut Gems is a better movie I hope Marty Supreme can raise the bar for the Hollywood blockbuster.

Michael (2026) - 4/5
Well written and directed. Superbly acted. Covers the life of the singer until the late 1980s.

There was supposed to be a sequel but it's currently in development hell due to disagreements within the Jackson family, supposedly.

The Sheep Detectives (UK/USA/Ireland, 2026): 4/5

Every night, a shepherd (Hugh Jackman) reads mystery novels to his flock of sheep. One day, he is unexpectedly found dead, and the sheep bond together to try and solve the mystery of what happened to him.

I really enjoyed this, such an entertaining whodunnit/mystery spoof. Worth watching.

Spider-Noir - 4/5 (Prime Video series) was pretty good. Worth it alone to see Nic Cage hamming it up in later eps. Writing and characterisation is pretty solid.

The TV budget limitations show in the fights though. Sandman's powers are pretty nerfed in this incarnation and the fights are very much "street level". I.e. people being thrown around in mostly building interiors.

Backrooms (2026) - 3/5
Atmospheric film where stuff happens. Execution was good, but overall very light on plot, but that was intentional. The filmmaker did a good job expanding the concepts from his Youtube short films into a feature-length. Helpful for people going in:- the film is set in 1990, that explains all of the usage of obsolete/old tech.

One thing I noticed is that nobody carries guns, despite it being set in USA. But I suppose that might've "ruined it" a bit. Shows that characters are all just normal people who don't WTF they're getting themselves into. I think a good contrast might be computer game Silent Hill: Homecoming, where some of the scariness was reduced because the protagonist was a military vet who was competent at combat.

Obsession (2026) - 4/5
Entertaining little character acting driven film. The lead actress absolutely nails it as the yandere girlfriend. The logic of the "rules" provided for the wish granter was consistent throughout the film, a very basic thing which a lot of established writers in Hollywood tend to stuff up in the last decade because there's been so many nepo-hire talentless hacks. Kudos given to director/writer Curry Barker.

The Death of Robin Hood (2026) - 4/5
Raw and brutal 1st act becomes a film about forgiveness and redemption later on. Well done cinema, keeps the high standard of the director's past works (Pig - 2021, A Quiet Place: Day One). The acting and cinematograpy are fantastic.

Citizen Vigilante (2026) - 1/5
Don't waste your time with this. Went in expecting some 1980s Canon Films-esque action film, like Death Wish 2 & 3, Dolph Lungren Punisher, got a poorly edited bore with a load of filler instead. Someone could make into it a 30ish min Youtube short film and lose nothing of value.

The protagonist is some high functioning autistic landlord. I was like okay, who cares? The editing is a mess. They had this one action set-piece where a bunch of SWAT police get fed into a killbox and gunned down by AK-47s with "movie magic" bottomless magazines. They kept cutting back and forth to the between the killbox action scene some other boring filler.

Go watch Death Wish 1-3 and even the Eli Roth directed Bruce Willis remake instead. This was the first Uwe Boll film I've actually watched and it'll probably be the last!

I don't think I've seen a Uwe Boll film since Alone in the Dark. That was the first and last.

Death Wish IV is pretty good too IMO, certainly better than the Roth film. Death Wish V on the other hand was pretty tiresome (though I know some feel say the opposite about IV and V).

Each Death Wish has its own identity.

1 is the serious drama one
2 is the exploitation one
3 is the black comedy one
4 is the Cannon action one
5 is the Canadian DTV one.

That's actually a great summary!

Serie Noire (France, 1979) 4/5
A great French adaption of the novel A Hell of a Woman by the American heavyweight Jim Thompson. Currently ranks as my no.2 Thompson adaptation after the 90's version of After Dark, My Sweet with Jason Patric and right above the 70's version of The Killer Inside Me with Stacy Keach, though I'm yet to see Coup De Torchon, which is supposedly the real deal. Serie Noire perfectly captures the pathetic door to door salesman's descent into madness as he gets involved with a teenage prostitute. Patrick Dewaere completely immersed himself in the lead role and after seeing him in other movies I can understand his legendary status in French cinema. The man was a truly talented actor. Unfortunately he decided to end his life at the age of 35.

Tchao Pantin (France, 1983) 4.5/5
Bought the blu ray from Radiance and I'm happy with the purchase. It's almost criminal I hadn't heard of this before because it's not just a great movie, but a perfect representation of neo noir in the sense that it's as fatalistic and intense as the classic noirs from the 40's and 50's. The story is also highly original and pulls no punches. It's difficult to get into the plot without spoilers. Let's just say there are twists, and they're good. Basically the plot revolves around a gas station worker on the night shift who forms some sort of friendship with a local drug dealer who has gotten himself in trouble with his boss, but it doesn't take long until the story takes on a new dimension. Coluche was the name of the actor who got the lead here, mostly known as a comedian, but there's none of that here. It's a dark story set in a bad neighborhood where people are generally incapable of making good decisions. I'm giving an extra half star for the cinematography. The picture quality is excellent and the color palette is reminiscent of some other great 80's movies, namely Blood Simple and Blue Velvet.
