Akira R2J (2011 reissue) vs BD-J (2009)

Post by ForMeThisIsHeaven »

Comparison between the 2011 reissued DVD, and Blu-ray, released in 2009. Like Flashback 2012, I'm unable to say whether picture is new or old, but unlike 2012's reissue, Akira is, in no uncertain terms, HD Remastered. Color, grain, detail- plus a particular combination of gritty picture & moniker, will have you lauding (& drooling) over the letters DVD. Like my other entries, images should be viewed in 480 (DVD), as Windows Key+PrtScr doesn't accurately depict detail. Granted, reducing resolution doesn't change the manner in which playback was done (laptop, using an external disc drive), but it will give a much better idea of what to expect when viewed optimally on a television monitor, using HDMI. Blu-ray's perfect of course, but enthusiasts will most definitely prefer the darker tones and gritty picture of DVD, whose color deserves special mention like Eva (& others) renewal. You'll also drool over its disc art, which matches the best of sleeves. E.g. Flashback (Reissue), DYRL (Renewed), Castle/Mononoke. And lastly, despite Blu-ray's moniker, there's no DTS track.
