"The Green Inferno follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle. "
Junge/cannibal movie from Eli Roth. Supposed to be a tribute to Deodato and Lenzi. Sounds intriguing. When was the last time there was a decent cannibal film?
Not the greatest director on the planet of course, but all his prior films have been good(ish), so looking forward to this. Early reviews from Toronto are mostly positive, too.
Amusing trivia from IMDb, sounds a bit made up or at least exaggerated, but anyway:
"When Eli Roth and crew approached the villagers to be extras in the film he soon realized that they had never seen a movie and had no concept of what one was. To demonstrate what a movie was, Eli brought a TV and a copy of Cannibal Holocaust and had a screening for everyone. The villagers loved it and gladly acted in the film."
And a good quote:
"Fuck it, let’s see what happens if we do a cannibal movie for modern audiences."

Can't imagine there's many out there desperate to see a resurgence of the cannibal subgenre... sounds like straight to DVD fodder to me.

Maybe not many, but the 1970's and 1980's cannibal films still have their fans. Those movies, although gory exploitation flicks, were also adventure films to some extent. The jungles, the caves, and rivers and the passable production values added their own charm. The Green Inferno looks relatively promising to me - it's certainly a theatrical production and hopefully follows the style of the old cannibal films.
But you're right, if the genre did do a comeback, most films would probably be mini-budget straight-to-DVD gore films that would lack many of the elements that made the old cannibal movies work.

Re: The Green Inferno (Eli Roth) (2013)
I saw this a few days ago and was very happy with the way it turned out. Great to see cannibals back on screen. Beautiful locations, some nice adventure film atmosphere during the first half (as a good cannibal film should have), and pretty damn stomach churning practical gore. I know I'm getting more sensitive as I grow older (probably a good thing), but I was really wondering how the hell did they get an R for this? The first killing in the village is not far from the 80s Guinea Pig stuff.
Of course the film is not perfect. It doesn't have Cannibal Holocaust's almost schizophrenic mix of strong social commentary and exploitation of the very same matter, even though Roth throws in some superficial commentary, nor does it have Riz Ortolani's beautiful score. The ending could be a bit more effective, too, and perhaps the beginning could be more compact. But perhaps we shouldn't be comparing it to the best of all cannibal films. It's good enough (and more) the way it is.

Having watched this recently I gotta say I don't remember a movie which pissed me off more than this in a recent memory. Absolute fucking garbage. Inconsistent tone ranging from torture porn to stoner comedy and shit jokes (because why not right?), mind boggling scenes, terrible cardboard cut out characters which you couldn't care less about and ridiculous nonsensical ending because maybe Eli Roth will find more idiots who will finance the sequel. Fuck you, Eli Roth.
