19 more, so yeah, as I expected... the 70's was common ground territory. Though the glorious 80's is the real test :)

And FYI, 90% of the ones you haven't seen from mine are classics, minor classics and must see's... so get on that :D

Im gonna watch Being There again soon. I always feel ambivalent about that movie. But it's the kind of flick that grows on me with every watch.

Some of the commons I would expect like Taxi Driver, Star Wars and Dirty Harry, though their are some films like Being There which are in my top 100 of all-time (all countries) that I would have hope to have seen :). Looking forward to going over the 80s.

I rewatched a few Hollywood films over the past few days Darby O’Gill and the Little People (which I watch almost every St. Patricks Day, so I'm pretty familiar with the film) and Buchanan Rides Alone which I like quite enough, though I don't think I put it in the top 10.

Admittedly, my 80's list contains heavy doses of schlock, Cannon cheese and commercial fluff, but faves are faves. Once again, I will venture some guesses, and I think that at least two or more of these makes your 80's list that didn't make mine....

Blade Runner
Body Double
E.T.
The Outsiders
Amadeus
The Untouchables
Full Metal Jacket

But don't reveal anything yet.... I like to be surprised :D

Wait... wait... wait... hold on... stop the presses! You haven't seen First Blood and Poltergeist??? Geezus, man :D I know there's a lot of movies out there, but some are just mandatory. You're either older or younger than I thought, because I don't know anyone who grew up in the 80's who haven't seen those two. That's shocking.

Im rarely surprised by your picks, as most are solid. But im more surprised by the ones you haven't seen :)

On a separate note... I only got two guesses right so far.... so im sort of in the clear. Though I suspect Full Metal Jacket will definitely be on there.

"You haven't seen ..." It's a phrase I hear quite often, but then every cinephile hears it who discusses movies with others. So let us use quantitative reasoning for those two films:

First Blood:
IMDB votes: 134079
Important Lists: 500 Essential Cult Films, Empire 500

Poltergeist:
IMDB votes: 75025
Important Lists: Top 500 Horror Movies, AFI 100 Years 100 Thrills, 501 Must See Movies, NYT Best 1000, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, David Thompson 1000

Diagnosis: Both I should see and will see, First Blood from a populist standpoint and Poltergeist from a critical standpoint and mandatory for horror fans, but not necessarily for others. So far with those stats it would seem they would be on the lower end of mandatory with Poltergeist edging out First Blood on the importance factor :D (yes I know completely nerd reasoning here).

In case you were wondering I was quite young in 82 and parents would not play horror or violent films in the house. I really thought I was going to be taken to task for Fast Times ..., which I have got the most ribbing for not watching (all of it.)

On Amadeus, I grew up playing the piano and listening to Mozart. It is also a well done film.
On ET: I like the film, but their are a lot of films that year I like better.
On Body Double: It has been years since I have seen this, though I remember lots of the scenes. I never felt like rewatching it.
On Blade Runner: this was a no duh on my list so that was an easy guess :D.

True, Blade Runner was an easy one... Amadeus I only had strong suspicions on, and E.T. was a shot in the dark, since you seem to like a lot of (in my mind) schmaltzy stuff :D Which there is nothing wrong with, of course.

I didn't see First Blood or Poltergeist in '82 either... I was only five :) But to me, those are just two unmissable 80's classics that I would watch later many times on VHS and TV. I just think it would hard not to stumble upon them in one way or the other.

Fast Times I understand. Sure, it's a cult classic of sorts. And while I, personally own pretty much every 80's teen flick ever made, I really know no one outside of the interwebs who has ever seen it.

Here's a question.... do you often have to "explain" your movie collection to visitors? I think i've had to do that to almost every person who has ever looked at my shelves... aside from a few. Especially women :dontknow:

All three films (including Fast Times ...) were mentioned quite a bit growing up. I saw scenes of all three movies, I just never got around to them (I do average around 400-450 movies a year :)).

Now to the question: I often get the response "How many movies did you just say?" My explanation goes this way: it is a hobby :D. I always kind of laugh when someone says they have a huge collection of -- hundred films. But yes I always have to explain myself.

I get that too, but I meant more in terms of explaining your taste. I've had quite a few people over who probably just watch the newest mainstream releases, and maybe have a few faves on dvd, so trying to explain B&W flicks from the late 30's, HK cinema, Euro Crime etc. just seems like an uphill battle every time, and I just really don't bother anymore.

Also, if ever I met a woman my age who's favorite movie isn't fucking Dirty Dancing I would be truly shocked. I mean, come on bitches.... a little originality please.

Oh OK I get that. The answer to that is also a yes. I even get it with people who are a decade or more older than I am. Out of all the bizarre movies I have the silent films are the ones I tend to get the strangest reaction to. Now I have converted some people into liking some silent film, but even with older audiences (though they also tend to be the most sympathetic) they view me as some space oddity sometimes with a pondering and puzzling look that you sometimes see a dog have when you are trying to explain object oriented programming to.

But yes I have got the same reaction to non-English films, non-English horror films, B&W (this one I really do not understand), independent, art-films, popular mainsteam films (for my hipster friends who are only into Wes Anderson), martia art films (from hipster friends only into ...), HK cinema etc...

There is always a good feeling though when you can get someone to look at something differently like non-English films, silent or other. I have had comments such as "I never really thought that there were so many good non-American films" to positive comments on Buster Keaton and others. Of course I have had discenting views on many things ("that's boring; where's the nudity, where's the action"), but I still fight on.

I find it hilarious when people will say something like that's from 1974, that's old. Ugh.

When ever I have to "defend" my love of "old" movies, I just say every movie you haven't seen is a new movie. I don't remember who said that, but it's true.

Haven't been super successful in converting many people to stuff from my shelves. And I don't really bother anymore. There was this woman once who wanted to see a HK movie, cuz she wanted to understand why I love it so much, but I just said no, you're not gonna like it, and you're not gonna understand it. She was pretty offended, which perhaps is understandable, but I knew she wouldn't get it, so what's the point.

Lots of great picks, though no huge surprises. I think im slowly zoning in on your taste... wide as it is :D

I got the Untouchables right :) And I should have guessed Brazil.... Duh!

You should put Extreme Prejudice at the top of your 80's action watch list.... you will not be disappointed.

I will do. The past week I looked at two different FYEs and Best Buy but did not find the Rambo collection (FYE did have First Blood by itself, but I've been wanting the collection) and Poltergeist (of course number 2 and 3 were for sale.)

I've seen Brazil too many times not to put it on the list :). I could not lie about The Untouchables. I saw it twice when it came out in the theater (and I've seen it several times since) and it made too much of an imprint.

I am curious on what you will consider a big surprise :D. No guesses on 1995 to 1999 or 1935 to 1939?

DISCLAIMER: Few of these are actual faves or even movies I like enough to have on my shelf. The majority are movies that entertained me in some way, didn't make me wanna blow my brains out, or make me vomit and switch off midway through. I think the naughts were the absolute worst decade in Hollywood history, and the tens sure as fuckballs ain't shaping up any better. I have more or less lost all interest in new Hollywood output, and, as the Retro Robot I am, focus my cinematic sight backwards in time or at Asian and European films instead. With that said.... here are my picks for that deplorable decade.....

You should probably bold what is among your favs for that past post.

I created a seperate thread on my favorites year by year. I will put up 1930-34 next week. I finally found Poltergeist, so I expect to watch that in the next few weeks. You can push other titles I have not seen :D (I know Guns of Navarone and First Blood whenever I can find it).
