One Year of Asian Movies!

Post by HungFist »

Big thanks to my friend Heka for putting up with me and our weekly Asian movie nights. It's been almost exactly one year since we watched the first film together, Alien vs. Ninja... to which I told him to bring some beer, because I was unsure how that film would play for a J-newbie... one year, 69 movies and a lot of beer later it's finally time to say goodbye.

Within that one one year we watched 69 Japanese (and a few Hong Kong and Korean) movies, including films by Takeshi Kitano, Kenji Misumi, Sion Sono, Kinji Fukasaku, Shunji Iwai, Sogo Ishii, John Woo, Takashi Miike, and 16 Sonny Chiba movies! Still so many more films left that I wanted to screen... maybe next time.

See you in Japan some day!

I've wanted to see this for ages, but waiting till the Blu-ray comes down in price.

I forgot Karate Warriors (Kazuhiko Yamaguchi, 1976) from the list. That raises the Sonny Chiba count to 16!

I think heka also has something to add...

Yes, the countless number of Kpop videos. Also some awesome MMA matches/highlights and the anime series Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. There were also two Louie episodes.

Now I have to somehow survive without my weekly dose of fantastic movies like The Executioner (1974). Luckily the road is already burning under my feet and I can hear the call of the new lands.

I've been ripping some not-on-R2J films to my hard drive... Heka can expect our movie nights to restart in Japan in about 6 months (unless he fucks up something) with films like...

and when we run out of that stuff, we'll go Tsutaya to rent some more Fukasaku!

Image
(and yes, that's Bunta Sugawara as policeman! Maybe we'll watch some where he plays a gangster, too)

My problem is that I've still got at least 30 unwatched R2J's (and other dvds) that I'm going to have to leave in Finland... somewhat ironic I can't watch my Japanese dvds because I'm in Japan
