The problem is that with BD players the region locking is hardware based. With DVD players you can region unlock them by patching the hardware with some button pushes on your remote. Not so with BD players.Yi-Long wrote:I wish they'd just release some firmware/patch upgrade to make the BR/DVD playback region-free. I'd even be willing to pay for it.

I thought some BR-players could also be 'hacked' through some button-combi's!?thelostdragon wrote:The problem is that with BD players the region locking is hardware based. You asked for region free BD Yi, not BD Multi-region. It may sound pedantic but when it comes to BD, there's a difference. BD Multi-region was cracked years ago. You also asked for DVD region, which was cracked almost after it launched, so not sure what you mean there.

Re: The HD News & Technology Thread!
Sorry for the confusion. I just mean a BR player that is able to play every BR, regardless of region-code. I don' care if you have to do a button-combi or not. Also, preferably, it also plays every DVD regardless of region-code.

Good on them. I wish more studios took this stance. I'm not sure how professional it is though.

damn! or something along the lines of "oh dear!". More literally it means something like "I'm troubled".

Re: The HD News & Technology Thread!
"Komatta" (komaru) means troubling. You can use it for example when something is made unnecessarily difficult... like when when you live in Japan and you always have to carry your "gaijin card" (foreign registration card) with you just because some stupid racist law requires you to do so (komatta na...).bradavon wrote:What does "komatta na" mean?
"Na" doesn't really mean anything, although it has a meaning ( ). Basically it adds a sigh or ... (three dots) or "isn't it" after what you've said.
You could translate "komatta na" as "troubling, isn't it...". But since this kind of expression is not so commonly used in the English language you often see it translated in various ways depending on the context.

For what purpose? Britain used to have identical laws back in the 50s. Thankfully all now abolished.
It's pretty common. Thanks btw.HungFist wrote:You could translate "komatta na" as "troubling, isn't it..."

So it can be used the same way as 'ne' then? Can't say I've picked up on that.HungFist wrote:or "isn't it" after what you've said.

For the purpose of... actually, no one knows.bradavon wrote:HungFist wrote:Like when when you live in Japan and you always have to carry your "gaijin card" (foreign registration card) with you just because some stupid racist law requires you to do so (komatta na...)

yes, it's used in the same way as "ne", and in some cases the meaning is also almost the same. But "na" is something you could use when you're talking to yourself ("isn't it" is hence a bit misleading translation), while "ne" is when you're talking to someone (here "isn't it" is a very accurate translation).gasteropod wrote:So it can be used the same way as 'ne' then? But keep in mind I'm no Japanese teacher. I struggle with the language every day. Don't take everything I tell you as a fact

... although "ne" is also used very commonly in そうですね as a reply to someone when you agree, in which case "isn't it" would be a very inaccurate translation

Why is that inaccurate? Makes sense to me, and that's how it's most commonly used.

Re: The HD News & Technology Thread!
Couldn't care less at the moment. I guess it's gonna be an expensive technology, so all we can expect during the first few years are some major blockbusters and the 137th home video edition of Terminator 2. Sure, if they released some interesting stuff that isn't available on DVD, but I can't really see that happening anytime soon.

Too early for me to express any interest.
Will wait until the product is out there.
You can buy 4K TVs with almost nothing to watch on them.
