What's it like? I like the first one, the second is tosh and I've not seen the third. With the original cast back, it looks pretty good again.

The BBFC themselves only enforced 3 seconds of cuts, to obtain 12A:

Distributor chose to make one cut to sight of man having his head slammed into a wall resulting in a follow-on shot of the man's broken and bloodied nose in order to attain a 12A category. An uncut 15 was available.

They're all 12A except for the first one.

It's possible that the MPAA had already required cuts for the PG-13.

The film was originally passed with a '15' in the UK but the distribtuor complained and so the BBFC offered them a '12' with a single 3-sec cut (as noted above).

Hard to imagine a mere 3 secs making all the difference between a '12' and a '15' but there you go...

I hardly ever watch DTV films. They're usually catshite. Back in the late 80s/early 90s it was a different story and even the cheesy ones were fun...

Blood Money 1.5/5

You'd expect the teaming of genre icons Lee Van Cleef & Lo Lieh to produce the goods entertainment wise-sadly that's not the case in this silly spaghetti western/kung fu hybrid.the plot, such as it is involves Van Cleef & Lieh teaming up to find treasure, the clues to which are tatooed on various ladies arses! nice anamorphic transfer on this thai release, taken from a french print.

When there are always more than enough proper films being made. I don't see the point.

Il grande silenzio (Italy/France, 1968) – 4,5/5
Psychotic bounty hunter (excellent Klaus Kinski) and mute killer (Jean-Louis Trintignant) hunt each other in Sergio Corbucci’s stunning western. Blessed with Ennio Morricone’s terrific score and an ending that went straight to cinema history books, the entire film is set in snowy mountains. The gruelling conditions make even Hideo Gosha’s Goyokin pale in comparison. One of the best and most distinctive westerns ever made.

It's a great movie. And curiously the first title that popped into my mind when I read about Hideo Gosha's "Goyokin". Snow-Setting and all. Samurai-Flicks and Spaghetti-Western sure do have something in common. You like one genre, chances are high you also dig the other. :D

I cannot tell for Hung-Fist, but I watched an uncut ARTE-Screening on TV once, and there's also a German DVD available. US- and UK-DVD both go under the name of "The great Silence":

I also saw it on TV.

The UK dvd should be the best. It's non-anamorphic but has the italian audio and subs. According to dvdtimes the transfer is almost identical to the US dvd (which is missing Ita audio). DVDtimes claims that the running time is 105 min (NTSC running time), but I think it's a mistake as dvdcompare states 101 min (PAL running time).

The German dvd (Ita and Ger audio, Ger subs) would seem to have a transfer very similar to the R2J (Ita, Eng and JP audio, JP subs), although it's Native PAL while the R2J is NTSC. The French (FR and Ita audio, FR subs) and Spanish (SPA and ITA audio, SPA subs) are the only anamorphic editions (same transfer) I know of, but the transfer doesn't look all that great.

In other words, buy the UK dvd and pray that it is Native PAL.

DVD Times are more reliable than DVD Compare.

But in this case the chances are against it. You often see NTSC running time incorrectly marked for PAL transfers because the person just checked the running time from IMDB. All my French Hideo Gosha dvds state NTSC running times in the dvd case, while the transfers are all Native PAL. The DVD Times review makes no reference to running time / conversions issues in the text, while dvdcompare states:
# R0 America- Fantoma/Image - No cuts (runtime 105:21 NTSC)
# R0 United Kingdom- Eureka Video - No cuts (runtime 101:00 PAL)

Taken BD 4/5

Cracking Liam Neeson action thriller is short, sharp and no nonesense entertainment.Starts off a little slowly but the last hour never lets up. Annoyingly the UK BD doesn't have hard subs for the non-english speaking scenes (about a minute's worth) you have to turn on the hoh subs to see what's being said. Did anyone see this in cinemas, did it have hard coded subs ?

It had subs in the cinema, they just messed up the Blu Ray the muppets! amazing that any company can still make such mistakes.

How annoying.they should recall and repress the blu-ray and offer an exchange programme.i guess because there is only a small amount of foreign speaking lines they didn't bother.

Its a rare thing, but it always get on my nerves when it happens. I still have region 1 Rambo 3 with no subs when the non english speak, you know its only a small amount, but its annoying.

I wish they cared about the customer or they would do an exchange, but we know that would cost them a few pound.

I am waiting to see what happens with other versions, but the UK one will be the one I end up with as I know other regions may do it worse or region code the discs.

That reminds me of the EiV UK Rush Hour DVD, when I watched it and realised there were no subtitles for the foreign bits, I took it back and got a refund.

The thing is so many films never had subs to start with, but once you think about it and get it confirmed you missed out on subs its painful. I can imagine countless discs have this missing subtitle problem and many we may own but never thought about.

It's intentional. They don't hardcode the subs so the same textless print can be used throughout Europe. The failure to include optional subs that automatically pop up in English is a glitch but really the whole multi-language thing is to blame. It's easier for the distributors to leave them switched off.

Personally I don't mind if subs are removable or burnt in but there should fucking be something!

I heard Taken is full of European stereotypes and in case you didn't spot the French men, he has a massive baguette under his arm.

p.s -Who god damn it, is driving the boat? :D.

If I remember correctly, the Rush Hour DVD didn't even contain English subtitles at all!
