Please be aware it's NOT a definitive list but I'd like to make it definitive so please post any updates, corrections or missing Asian Madman titles!

No way is one 10 min featurette better than hours of docs that dont have talking in much anyway, the Musa stuff on the Korean dvds are very good even though they aint subbed, far better than any 10 min featurette ever could be.

and I guess if anyone actually owns all the versions and compares them its hard to say whats best, guess some people will have all the versions of all films if they have the cash and love the films.

You're just biased to Korean DVDs, you must be as the subs certainly have problems . I forgot to mention the PQ is far from good on the Korean DVD too (it's acceptable). I'm hoping it's up there with the PA DVD PQ wise! Which is far superior! Lost Dragon did a comparison between the two, it was obvious by that alone.

If memory serves me correctly they cut off at the sides and were just sloppily made. Bruce Leeroy also pointed this out at the time, as did others. I've kept it as I would like to own both cuts, even though I prefer the shorter one.

What about [b]JSA[/b] and [b]Violent Cop[/b] Romero do they interest you?

I own them both already and JSA was pretty top picture and sound, and from waht I remember the subs were as good as any. The extras I never bothered with as its a complex film so thought I may need subs for the extras I guess.

Violent Cop may interest me if they do a great dvd as I own the UK dvd and remember its pants, but watcbale.

Twilight Samurai interests me most as I do have the wonderfull Japanese L.E. but it has 4 hours + of amazing docs unsubbed if they could transfer all that over to the R4 edition I will buy it again for the extras alone

Considering EE's track record on extras I doubt very much it will have 4 hours of extras. I'm betting an hours worth a most, all their DVDs are single disc affairs too!

Well I mean that most the Lone Wolf and Cubs films have been out in UK for many years and are infamous as they were banned in the 80's, but all they did was edit about 4 of the films together to create 1 film called Shogun Assassin.

So basically Shogun Assassin is like a best of version from the series of 6 Lone Wolf and Cub films (all of which are out in america and they look amazing and have staggering subs! which are different colours for each person talking and it makes it soo easy to understand)
but I havent seen it as I am sure it makes no sense at all as editing loads of films into one is bollocks! thats the out of asia market for you ruin films any way they can and focus on the gore only as the actual films are more complex than you would imagine and look amazing! and yes have shitloads of people getting ripped to shit with swords and stuff. :w00t:

Actually if EE have Throne of Blood I might get that as well with Samjuro and/or Yojimbo (as I said), and Musa.
That Michael DVD review says Musa is in the wrong aspect ratio though, it is presented in 2.45/1 instead of 2.35/1 for some reason :wacko::unsure:

People who have the LE I can understand I here it's very nice but for people who only own the standard DVD or don't own it at all I'd get the R4.

Not if Grim they do it's in their cinema/coming soon section.

tbh Grim many DVDs that are listed as 2.35:1 are in fact 2.40/2.45/2.55 or visa versa I'd not take this as fully accurate information and besides would it make a huge difference?

I believe each rental DVD has a 3-4 month rental window.

JSA went rental on the 01/09/2004 so I'd imagine around December/January time. Musa has had a 4 month rental window.

I hope [b]The Eye[/b] has some bonus features and DTS! If not I'll get the UK R2.

It's not like any other decent version is out there AFAIK only the Tartan DVD is also anamorphic and that's missing the extras, and is only DD2.0.

Might be worth nothing that on the Volcano High EE release, i fyou want to watch the longer version with the scenes back in teh film, you can only watch it with a stereo soundtrack. The DTS and DD5.1 are only for the shorter cut.

So that really should make that version a no-no.

WTF??? How do you know this Degeneration?

Do you have it? So the film skips from 5.1 to 2.0 when watching with the extra scenes?

What a mess EE have made of this. It looks like they've released this by giving us Musa uncut least. I may remove it from the list above.

Nope.

[b]Red Beard[/b] is a Kurosawa title and going by the cover doesn't look like a samurai film at all but of course the samurai films come first.

Rashomon is also good (not really a samurai film either I think?), the plotline is the "several different versions of one event" story that Hero has elements of. It is good but not as entertaining as Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood or Yojimbo IMO.
What makes the Criterion of Rashomon so good?
You're right about Red Beard (1965), that is a period medical drama set in 19th century Japan so certainly not a samurai film.
