Fox Slashes Prices on (some) Blu-ray Catalogue Titles -

Contrary to the link Universal beat them to it. It's about time, Fox charge are fortune. Pity it's not across the board. Of the list I'll pick up Edward Scissorhands and Speed.

extract from review
"Presented in 1080p with the MPEG-2 codec, 'Kiss of the Dragon' is a visual mess. This is the first time I've ever seen such a thing, but the standard-def edition of this film has a higher quality print that's shockingly more stable."
so LOL back blu fanboy

I've had my first Blu-Ray experience today.
My player is a Region B Sony BDP-S300 connected via component cables (1080i) to a 720p Sanyo Z4 videoprojector.
I'm sending the sound via a coaxial cable to my old non-HDMI Yamaha amplifier.
The bad:
-The player has a fan that makes a lot of noise whenever it loads java content.
-Loading times are atrocious.
The good:
-PQ is perfect. Colours are richer, wide shots are more detailed. I didn't see that "3D pop" effect that some people have been talking about, but I'm more than satisfied. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 looks awesome. Crap film, but awesome.
-Sound is great. Even though I'm limited to the inferior 640 Kbits/s DD track, it sounds much clearer than the crappy 448/384 Kbits/s tracks we used to get on DVD.
-Love the pop-up menus.
Even on a 720p projector, it's worth the upgrade.
If you haven't bought a player yet, you really ought to wait a bit longer and buy a faster one though. The one I've bought is hopeless.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

TVs generally need calibrating properly in order to get that effect. Can you calibrate projectors? I don't know much about them. But if so, a good test is on the Ratatouille Blu-ray. Use the contrast and brightness test to get those two right and you'll get a better 3D effect.tom2681 wrote:I didn't see that "3D pop" effect that some people have been talking about, but I'm more than satisfied.

Not interested in Ratatouille, but I'm sure there are/will be other BDs with the same feature.
I'm quite confident that my projector is properly calibrated anyway.
Maybe I was just expecting too much.
Or maybe you need a true 1080p display to get that effect.

I went Blu one month ago.
Right when Toshiba said they'd quit.
Players have become cheap (I paid 338€ for mine), studio support is no longer an issue...
Unless you're interested in interactive extra features, I'd say this is the right time to go Blu.
EDIT:
And it looks like I jumped in at the right time, too (prices started going up right after I bought my player).

The cheapest Full HD projector I can find costs 1700€.
The cheapest DTS-HD/TrueHD compatible amp I can find costs 700€.
So I'm going to sit and wait. No rush.
