Hardly in-depth, but the article raises an interesting point.

It seems to be a big problem in USA that no matter what they do, the ratings become synonymous with something they're not supposed to be. G is for childer, NC-17 is for porn...

Thankfully in many other countries like UK, Finland or Japan there's no problem with releasing 18 rated films for mainstream audiences. Although I supposed in the UK it's because BBFC used to label almost everything 18 back in the days

Now they label everything 12A :D You're right though especially with HK films, it always seemed to be "Martial Arts - ADULTS ONLY!"
Funny they mention 2001, isnt that still U rated by the BBFC even today?

Yes. I think part of the point the article was making - or at least what I took from it - was that there used to be 'adult' films (i.e. films aimed at adults) that had low ratings (could be viewed by anyone). E.g. Casablanca and Citizen Kane are 'adult' films but rated no higher than 'PG'. Now almost all 'adult' films boast higher certificates (usually '15' or '18') and strong content just to prove that they are indeed for adults. This has filtered down to films aimed at younger viewers. The '12' category has opened a wide commercially desirable gap where you have limitless films that can be seen by children (frankly marketed toward them) yet cynically insert choice doses of adult content (we're now at the stage where comic book movies like X-Men contain strong language and violence yet enjoy the benefits of promotional kiddie tie-ins). If Citizen Kane were made now it would no doubt be passed '12' for one use of strong language ("where's my fucking sled?"). Now I have no problem with adult content. Cynicism and drip-feeding unsuitable content to children I do have a problem with. Where are the classic films of this generation that are actually suitable for kids?

I've said this before, but I can't believe the HKL Dragon Lord is an 18.
