TV 'Making Of' Documentaries (films and their vintage docs)

Post by luckystars »

Something I love that has dwindled over past years is the official made for tv 'Making of' documentary, that would accompany a films release and maybe only ever get shown a couple times on tv and disappear forever. Luckily some end up on DVD, others you have to source on VHS, rips etc.

Also recently Blu-Rays are carrying Featurettes that use excerpts of these old docs, but cut them in to chunks or only show them in tiny bits.

Most interesting IMO are docs made for films with highly technical productions....however I find for any decent film, these vintage documentaires give great insight to the methods of production at the time, and are a part of cinema history.

List up your favourite films and where the vintage 'Making of' doc can be found, but in their full, original format.

I'll start this off with the last film I watched..

Silent Running 1972
Masters of Cinema have a terrific and definitive 50 minute vintage Making Of on their Blu-Ray which was made alongside the production. Essential viewing. Sample here:

Batman 1989

"The Making Of A Hero" documentary is not available other than youtube!! Dammit this needed to be on the Blu-Ray. However footage was used to make the extras. This needs to be released officially! Sample here:

I wish they would release that epic Jaws doc that's been sitting around for years awaiting release.

When I was 8, I recorded RIDDLE ME THIS, WHY IS BATMAN FOREVER?, which I watched endlessly in the run-up to the film being released. If nothing else, it introduced me to the fantastic Seal song "Kiss From A Rose", which is in the film, but waaaay at the end of the credits.

This doc is on the DVD but it's a different edit.
