The re-releases from Sony are supposedly reformatted to 1.78 anamorphic but the previous Fox releases were 1.33. Did they just cut off the top and bottom of the screen?

IIRC, they were shot in widescreen and then cropped to 4:3 by FX Channel for their TV screenings.

I'm in the middle of watching S5 myself on TV, I can tell you that it definitely looks cramped at times.

It's shown in 4:3 in NZ right?

Thankfully almost everything is shown in WS over here, on Digital (Analogue tends to be a mixture).
