Internet working in IE but not firefox...

Uusually I use firefox to connect to the internet, but since yesterday on my laptop it has been saying "Server not found" when going to any site in firefox, but everything works fine in IE...

Anyone know what's happening here or why this could be happening?

Check:

1. Tools
2. Options
3. Advanced
4. Network tab
5. Connection - Settings
6. Is it as follows? -



Also make sure you've clicked:

1. Tools
2. Clear Recent History
3. Clear the lot

Also try Firefox in Safe mode, click:

1. Start
2. 2000/XP - Run / Vista/Windows 7 - In the search box.
3. Type: firefox -safe-mode

If that doesn't work: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

This will open Firefox with all add-ons/customisation disabled. Does it work then>?

tried all the above, and still no joy.

Going to run spybot and adaware to see if those can find something malicious on the computer...

If Safe Mode didn't help it's unlikely to be anything wrong with Firefox as such. Do you customise Firefox much? If not, you could try:

1.Uninstall
2. Delete the Firefox Program Files AND Profile folders.
3. Reinstall

tried that as well now, and still same outcome when I reinstall. Ran adaware and spybot too, with no success... I just don't understand what's going on!!!

You definitely the Profile "AND" Program Files folders? If the Profile folder has been deleted, a new one will be created and I'm fresh out of ideas.

I deleted the entire Mozilla Firefox directory in Program Files, and everything in it. Is there another location that firefox info is held? Cause I'll delete it all!!! I'm not afraid to do it!

I just can't fathom what is going on, one day it works fine, the next it doesn't. Maybe be a virus or something?

Yes, definitely. That folder is really just the program itself. All settings are stored in your Firefox Profile folder. On 2000/XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\Mozilla

I'm pretty sure that's where it is on XP. On Vista/Windows 7:

C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

Delete that, when Firefox isn't running and it will be created the next time you open it. You can then re-install all your add-ons.

Well, solved the problem by trying something different.

Uninstalled the anti-virus software I was running, and put on avast instead. Now works fine. Something about the antivirus software I was using must've been causing it. It was a Norton release, and I think it probably was when the pop up box saying things like "Software X is trying to connect to the Internet, what action to take?" I must have clicked the "always block" option or something like that.

Bloody weird. Just glad it is working now!!

Norton & Symantec are awful!

Norton is awful but not Symantec. The corporate Symantec AntiVirus is good but their home Norton AntiVirus/Internet Security is hideous. I bet an uninstall/reinstall would've fixed it.

Norton software is known in the IT industry to be hideous. They make their money from home users who don't know any better, no offence. I used to run their software. I wouldn't go back.

It came preinstalled on the laptop... I wouldn't have bought it myself!
