I'm sure you know Chrome has a built in PDF Viewer now (installing Adobe PDF Reader offers a secondary option too) but for other formats, this Google Docs Viewer extensions is a neat work around until this is added properly:

You'll want to go into Extensions --> Options and untick "Scalable Vector Graphics: svg" because Chrome can natively open that type of file anyway. PDF is already unticked.
