This is a quick comparison between the 1997 Jewel CD, and the 2008 Jewel Box remaster. I own a small fortune of imported Japanese animation, and was curious the quality of their early DVDs. Both carry a bit-rate of at least 7, and both hit the high 8's/9's regularly. It drops of course, but maintains such a high number a majority of the time, that watching on playback is like shuffling through a deck of valuable cards in FF8- video heads will drool over their data streams. PQ for 1997 is superb, and like many first edition R2 anime, can be kept for archival purposes. There's heavy scanner noise for 2008, and consequently, depending on how dark the area, detail seen in the older edition is now buried under said noise; compared to others like Macross Plus and Cowboy Bebop, whose remastered image revealed wealths of hidden information, the initial release for Blue is pristine. Scanner noise aside, picture is indeed new, but given the aforementioned fact, the difference is nothing like Macross or Bebop. Audio for Jewel CD is great, but audiophiles will prefer the 5.1 heard on Jewel Box, as it is now lossless, and equal to many other re-releases. If you pay the premium to import Japanese animation, you'll appreciate the fresh colors and updated sound. Forgive the water mark; skipping through frames produces said mark.

Thanks for the comparison. I have the 2008 DVD. Also got to see this in 35mm some years ago.
