The Terminator: US Blu-Ray vs R1US SE DVD

Post by tom2681 »

Blu top.
DVD bottom.

The BD uses mpeg-2.
Differences in hue should be genuine.

Oh dear. This isn't very encouraging.

Same fucking print. Zero improvement.

Slight increase in detail. Still catastrophic, though.

Doesn't look too bad. If you've got a good eye, you'll notice that there is more macroblocking on Arnold's cheek in the BD than on the DVD.

With the increase in resolution, you should be able to read every single name in there. But not here.

Kinda like Superbit DVD vs regular DVD.
Useless.

Seriously, WTF?! Sony really dropped the ball there.

Thanks Tom.

Yeah, seriously.
This is a movie that should be re-scanned at 4K and restored completely.
Come on, Sony. Give it a Blade Runner-like makeover.

I don't buy that "It's a low-budget 20-year old movie so it's bound to look like crap" excuse.

Eva: Is there any chance you can add the Studio Canal HD-DVD and someone else the Kinowelt German HD-DVD please?

I'll look properly when I get home tonight.

These captures show what we knew already:

1. This looks like the DVD.
2. PCM + BD25 + MPEG2 = Shite!

It's a shame Sony don't seem interested in re-releasing it. I bet by the time we get it in Europe it will look better.

Massive genralisation there, some can look superb on the exact same compression method and disc. Its not the disc, or codec they use, its how they encode it and use the space wise. But I am sure you know that.

Basically its becuase they are lazy sods, not becuase of the disc they used.

Fair point. Yes I did know that.

Can you name some examples which look fantastic and use? - PCM + BD25 + MPEG2. There aren't many, they look good at best.

Kung-Fu Hustle looks brilliant apart from a couple of dark shots that show macroblocking. Is it a BD25, though? I'm not entirely sure.

The American disc is, so I guess the rest are too:

I never said they all look shit. What I actually said was, as a general rule it's not a good idea. As most know, except for Sony all the BD25s use MPEG4.

It's hard to believe that one of those samples is BD.

And they dropped the original mono so it's overall worse(!)

Yeah, stick with your DVD. There's no point getting the BD period.

Even if you like the 5.1, it sounds like the Full-rate DTS on the R2J is still the best.

Well unless you have a MASSIVE screen :D you will notice some difference, esspecially in compression in some shots. Smaller screens, even 40 inhces you will be hard pushed to get loads out of a HD transfer like that.

The 5.1 is fucking shit on the R2 DVD.

HD's been a half disappointment overall - because of twats in the industry.

It depends. For example: I love the Terminator one but cannot stand most of Anchor Bay's (except for Halloween) 5.1 remixes or Fortune Star's either.

Anchor Bay's "Withnail and I" plus "A Long Good Friday" 5.1 remixs are so over the top it hurts your ears.
