Why were so many lines of dialogue left unsubtitled on the BFI release?!

Is this review of mine, worthy of being published? -
I can totally see why Hung loves it, the genre freak .Drive: 7 out of 10 (3.5 out of 5)
Based on the 2005 novel by author James Sallis, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (best known for 2008’s Bronson) brings us Drive, a neo-noir American crime thriller with European sensibilities.
Following on from the success of 2010’s excellent Blue Valentine, upcoming star Ryan Gosling plays “Driver”, a man who speaks more through his physicality and control behind the wheel than his svelte spoken word. “Driver” is a movie stunt driver by day and by night a getaway driver for hire. His terms are simple: “You give me a time and place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what. I don't sit in while you're running it down; I don't carry a gun... I drive.”
Living next door, is single Mum Irene (Carey Mulligan, Never Let Me Go), who early on forges an illicit romance with “Driver” (in the Clint Eastwood Man with no name tradition). Things run smoothly, until Irene’s husband is released from prison and confides to our monosyllabic hero he’s being expected to pay off a debt, by robbing a Los Angeles off licence. Aware Irene and her son are in harm’s way, he agrees to help.
At this point, the film takes a dramatic shift and whilst they’re shown in short bursts, several violent encounters ensue. They are however consistently visceral and shot authentically; this is not violence Michael Bay (Transformers) style.
The photography at times is simply beautiful, especially during a romantic interlude in an escalator, which is one minute tender and breath taking in its simplicity and the next shockingly brutal.
Drive is not perfect, the violence at times comes across as gratuitous and the crooks are the usual 2D cardboard cut-outs.
Winning the Best Director award at the Cannes film festival earlier this year, Nicolas Winding Refn clearly has an admiration for American popular culture from the 1970s and 1980s (the underrated Manhunter particularly comes to mind), including the 1973 Chevrolet Malibu muscle car restored by Gosling for the role and 1980s inspired synthesiser pop from the likes of French electronica artists Kavinsky (Nightcall) and David Grellier (A Real Hero).
The film’s aesthetic, oozes 80s cool (or uncool, depending how you look at it).

Surrogates (2009) - 3/5
Obviously not a 'good' film, but worth a watch for fans of futuristic thrillers.

Siege actioner can't shake off its DTV origins but the director does well on a low budget.

Sucker Punch (2011) - 4/5
I was originally going to go see this at the cinema but all the negative reviews made me decide against it. They were fucking wrong! I really want to see the extended cut now, thought it'd be on this rental but turns out they only rent out the theatrical disc.

I haven't heard a single positive word about Sucker Punch apart from your review.
Think I'll wait until it turns up on TV.

It's being posted in this months Art Rocker magazine (music but they've got a book and film page), in WH Smiths on the 15th of December (which also happens to be my birthday) . It's voluntary but will hopefully become a profession.

Yeah I'm quite baffled because I'm more sensitive than most to mindless action (Transformers 3 1/5, Quantum of Solace 1/5 because I couldn't see anything) yet this was really goodMarkgway wrote:I haven't heard a single positive word about Sucker Punch apart from your review.

Pineapple Express (2008-USA) *½
Overlong, rambling stoner comedy; about as funny as being kicked in the balls.
Unfaithful (2002-USA-Germany-France) **½
Steamy adultery thriller... well acted, but goes on too long.

Halloween II (USA, 1981) – 2.5/5
Generic genre sequel picks up exactly where the first one left off. Carpenter’s music is again well used and the cinematography is quite good. Gore is non-existent like in the original, however, newcomer director Rick Rosenthal lacks Carpenter’s chiller-skills. Jamie Lee Curtis and the always pleasing Donald Pleasence star.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (USA, 1982) – 3.5/5
This one’s a fascinating turn in horror movie history: a sequel that entirely abandons what the series was identified with: Michael Myers, and the famous theme music. Instead, it’s a Halloween themed horror tale – and quite an original one. While not necessarily a classic it’s got enough atmosphere, strong soundtrack, and a captivating (if amusingly over the top) mystery storyline to make it a small gem.
btw, how the hell is this film’s IMDb rating 3.9/10. I’ne never met a person who didn’t speak highly of Halloween 3...

From all the morons who can't get over the fact it's not about Michael Myers (who died at the end of the second film). Me and my friend agree that it is 'THE MOST UNDERRATED FILM OF ALL TIME' haha.HungFist wrote:btw, how the hell is this film’s IMDb rating 3.9/10. Though it was mild compared to Tom Savini's work, HALLOWEEN II had some gore inserts done by Carpenter - needles to eyes, face blistering in hot-tub, etcHungFist wrote:Halloween II (USA, 1981) – 2.5/5

I feel a bit for director Rick Rosenthal who TRIED to make an atmospheric suspenser in the vein of the original and was overruled by the studio who employed - of all people - John Carpenter to rehash his work. I still think the film works but the gore was needless. I'd be interested to a see a proper director's cut.

Ambitious sci-fi thriller isn't a classic by any stretch but the sincere storytelling is admirable.
The doomsday ending is truly original - if totally and utterly depressing. Not a film to watch when you're on a downer.
