Tower Heist (2011-USA) ***

Maybe I'm being generous but I thought this was pretty darn entertaining.

Brett Ratner directs good movie shock!

Ted (USA, 2012) - 2.5/5
Amusing comedy runs out of laughs when it turns into the most conventional coming of age story. The CGI Ted is flawlessly executed, though, and the cast is not bad.

Frankenweenie (USA, 2012) - 3/5
A surprisingly enjoyable effort from Tim Burton, whose past 15 years are filled with miserable (Sleepy Hollow, Chocolate Factory) and plain uninteresting works. The beautifully animated film is a loving tribute to classic, gothic horror movies. It is, though, built on a weak screenplay that keeps it from becomming more - or even equal - to the sum of its parts. Endless genre nods and Burton's own style leave no room for enganing storyline.

+ the first 20 minutes of The Watch, starring Ben Stiller. Miserable.

Avengers Assemble 7/10
Starts really well, levels out, drags....really drags, gets exciting towards the end, but then still the ends a bit meh. There's a lot in this (probably needed paring down by 30 mins). It looks great the majority of the time. It's big. Iron man and Hulk are good. Probably worked really well at the IMAX but less so on DVD. Weren't the giant flying worm things in Transformers 3? Anyway quite impressive but really quite standard for a comicbook blockbuster. And why did they even care for that guy Phil? Actually think I would've liked it more if they had secret identities and more vunerability

I rated it 7/10 too, good, nothing more. Scarlett Johansson's arse was the best thing about it :D

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001-USA) **½

Even B-grade Woody Allen is better than most Hollywood comedy.

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (aka The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue) (1974) - 4/5

Great zombie film, although I think Zombi 2 is still the best.

Haven't posted on this one in quite a while, so here are a few I've watched in the past while...

The Dark Knight Rises 4/5
Enjoyed it, but wasn't great! Bane's voice just sounded wrong. Just didn't get overly gripped by it. Still enjoyable though.

Skyfall 3.5/5
Good fun. Quite intense at places. But again not as engaging as it could have been. Still preferred Casino royale.

Total Recall (remake) 2.5/5
Nothing more than average. Liked the nods to the original. Also liked that while they kept the same basic story, they gave it a new setting. Prefer adaptations to direct remakes. Kate Beckinsale's butt is still absolutely fantastic.

Safe House 3/5
Enjoyable, but at times quite predictable action film.

The Bourne Legacy 1.5 or maybe 2/5
Thought this was kind of a pointless film. Nothing that interesting happens in it. If there was a far better story I think it could have been quite good, as I liked the parallel agents idea. Very disappointed.

Stolen (2012-USA) *½
Dumb Nic Cage thriller. Imagine a boring version of TAKEN.

The Rebound (2009-USA) **½
Amiable romcom. Good showcase for Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Berberien Sound Studio (2011-UK-Germany) *

This is the very definition of a 'love it or hate it' movie.

I hated it.

Compliance 2.5/5Well made indie based on a true story where a prank call to a fast food restaurant leads to sexual abuse. no name cast and worth seeing but it left me feeling a little dirty and how many stupid/unlikeable characters can you squeeze into such a small production?

They Live 2.5/5 First time i've seen this Carpenter effort in an age and i have to say i found it somewhat slight and underwhelming this time round. The italian blu-ray is a solid effort though cropped slightly.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 8.5/10

They definitely saved the best sequel for 'last' here. Great story, cast, action and a brilliant screenplay is the icing on the cake. I remember seeing this as a kid in 89 and thinking it was YEARS after the first two. Looking at this now Harrison Ford only seems a little older.

To recap the series is officially
9.5/10
8/10
8.5/10

Ted (2012-USA) **½

Outageous, occasionally funny comedy is, for all its crudity, a rather sweet movie at heart.
Disappointed at the glamourised drug use, however. Something that's become increasingly acceptable in recent times. It's one thing for filmmakers to 'do' drugs, another to publicly advocate it. Just my two cents...

It's kind of a film where you watch it from time to time and start to get a little cheeky appreciation for it, it's not a great film, but is endearing (like most Carpenter flicks). Keep it.

Forgot to mention that in my text. I was also surprised by that. An American thing maybe? Didn't they make some stuff (marijuana?) legal in a few states recently?

Colorado and Washington.
I really don't see how legalisation is going to help prevent drug use but we'll see what happens...

Worse for me in TED was the cocaine use (the Flash Gordon scene); you didn't see it being taken, but the whole scene is designed to show how much fun cocaine is. It used to be that if someone in a movie took cocaine then they were a bad guy or consequences were shown. Here our beloved characters come out of the bathroom with white powder on their noses and have a great party time. This wasn't in a '18' cert but a '15' (in the UK) meaning impressionable teens would represent a significant chunk of the audience. I'm not saying that viewers are going to 'copy' necessarily, but the film presents an irresponsibly positive image of illegal (and dangerous) acts.

I agree with Mark, that Ted was a sweet movie at heart, in a strange way. I thought most of it was very funny :D Crude and sweet at the same time.
But to be honest I thought that the film would end with Ted dying so John could grow up/move on with his life. In some respects it had some elements/themes in common with Toy Story but flipped (the toy collector/kidnapper from TS2, the evil kid who tortures toys from the first film and a spin on the thirds' conclusion/moral

You guys weren't bothered by how conventional and preachy (of American family values) the film becomes towards the end? Seemed like an R-rated comedy combined with the moral message of a children's film.

Miserable it may be, but at least they came up with a great new title in Japan: Alien Bastards
