Weird. Are you saying we should use that now? I don't think mine look a bit orange, do they? Taxi Driver being one.

So before now you've been using something else Tom? Makes trying to maintain a standard rather pointless when you've been completely ignoring it.

Nope. I've always been using VirtualDubMod (same as you).
But for some reason, it's now giving me orange-looking caps.

I can't even begin to understand why (don't recall changing any settings).
All I know is VirtualDub 1.7.8 doesn't have this problem.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

FYI Tom:

There is a file called AuxSetup.exe in the VirtualDub folder, run it and choose to remove the registry settings. I'd uninstall and reinstall the handler (AVIFile) too.

See if that fixes the problem.

Hmm so long as the cap is the source frame then it should as exactly as it should be.

Just to be sure there's not something odd with your display I produced the above. Take matching caps and see if the checksums match those in the sfv file (QuickSFV etc). Not the greatest choice of scene f you're getting orangeness but hey...

Thanks Lourdes.

Nope, then.
It's not my display and it's not my PC.

My VDubMod's cap is orange (like yours).
VDub178's cap has more red.

-----

Let's get a closer look now. Which VDub version has the right colours?

I've included a cap taken with MPC + DScaler + Haali renderer.
Note that the only cap that looks completely different is the VirtualDubMod one.

-----

I think we should stop using VirtualDubMod for DVD vs HD comparisons.
The only reason why we hadn't noticed this problem before is because we were always comparing DVD to DVD.

I don't think we really need to change anything, there are more differences than just that with the DVD and HD comparisons to begin with, see here for example - http://loveandpop.com/test . The difference between VDub and VDubMod is smaller than the difference between the BD and both. It's the level of detail we look for with SD vs. DVD, not little colour differences.
In addition VDub + MPEG2 plugin seems to display interlacing that isn't there and to save images you have to copy / paste into an image editor / save which is rather tedious. I think I even added a disclaimer after some of my HD comparisons about ignoring small differences in hue.

You're right. I noticed that weird interlacing issue with VirtualDub too.

In your example, the difference in hue between BD and VDubMod is huge.
Of course sharpness is more important than hue, but we do these comparisons to see what the transfers look like.
Fact is: VirtualDubMod does not accurately represent what DVD transfers look like.

The only thing I can recommend at this time is:
-Media Player Classic.
-DScaler Mpeg-2 filter with deinterlacing set to "weave".
-Haali renderer.

...or PowerDVD with the settings that we've included in the first post of this thread.
That still works.

For SD comparisons there is no reason to change anything. Until now not a soul has noticed this and thought that the caps didn't look accurate, and because all caps are taken using the same method it's not a problem. It's also the easiest method by far, I've done about a hundred comparisons and God knows how many discs within those; without VDuBMod's slide > Shift+1 > Enter each comparison would take five times longer and I wouldn't have done half of the comparisons I have done.

For HD stuff there's a problem, I agree. I only do such comparisons as a showcase as we all know the HD release is the one to have, but you are right, we should try to make things as even as possible.
There's an easier method to use though Tom. Forget DScaler5, use the MPC-HC internal MPEG2 decoder set to Weave.
I think I'll start to do this for any new HD comparisons, it will mean I include fewer discs and take less caps but hey.

Too many tech terms. Are my SD caps correct? They are 100% identical to Lourdes' SD caps.

Yeah, I need to re-do 200 comparisons myself.
That'll be fun. :D

Ah, I knew I had missed one or two of your anime comparisons.
Thanks.

My thoughts too :D.

I won't be doing mine again, sorry. It takes way too long.

I was looking for it because I couldn't find my script for the R3K and I remembered that the R1 might not be so bad.

Patlabor Blu-Ray goes to the comparisons cemetary.
I was hoping to break the 400 barrier this month, but I keep running into dead comparisons. :x

Can you add Il Mare to the list pleas. It's now a comparison and I always use Lourdes procedure, so it's accurate.

400 comparisons. We made it!
Not bad for a small forum that has less than 20 regular members, eh? :D

I'm not sure what Salty or Captainjoe use (something else I think) but everyone else uses:

It's the third quotation set in the first post. AKA Lourdes's instructions.

I think I should have just ignored Tom and kept with VDubMod for HD stuff as there's still a difference in colours when using MPC-HC and its internal decoders + Haali. But mostly because it's a right bloody pain!
I'll be doing the GitS: SAC 'movie' trilogy sometime, that will be fun with the quirky navigation and tap-tap-tap-bloody-tapping of the frame step key.
