Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Takashi Miike, 2017)

Post by Guro Taku »

Miike is set to direct his 4th manga adaptation in a row (following Terraformars, Mole Song 2 and Blade of the Immortal) with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. According to Varitey:
The film will focus on Part 4 of the comic series titled “Diamond Is Unbreakable” in its English version. Kento Yamazaki will star as the hero, Josuke Higashikata. Release is set for the summer of 2017, with details about how the partners will distribute the film yet to be announced.

A review out of the Fantasia festival:

Yeah, I'll sit this one out. The interview headline stating that this flick sees Miike going mainstream was pretty funny though. Miike's been a mainstream filmmaker for at least 10 years now.

I should have but I didn't. Fans of the source manga/anime may have a different reaction but this predictably overlong slog just wasn't for me. I somewhat enjoyed a bit where a villain controls a toy army and uses its tanks, helicopers and soldiers to attack the protagonists but that's about it.

According to a recent interview with Miike, the planned sequels won't happen because the film was a financial flop in Japan.
It was way less well received than we expected. (...) So no, there’s no sequel planned and it wasn’t a hit. (...) In any case, it was well received by the writer and a few other people, but no, there won’t be a sequel.
Thank you, Japanese theater goers!
