Re: Sion Sono

Well, I thought 'Why Don't You Play In Hell' turned out better than its trailer, although that's just my personal opinion. I don't think it was THAT bad of a movie - it was a fun, silly, action-filled piece of Japanese pop, even though it wasn't the best Sono movie. I mean, it's all entertainment. A...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out

I recently watched: Enter the Void (2009, Director: Gaspar Noe) I don't like to rate movies by numbers, though. I feel ratings are too static in proportion to a dynamic experience of a movie. I liked the movie. I thought it had some very impressive visuals that made me feel sick afterwards. The movi...

I thought 'Gone Girl' was alright. Good entertainment and reflection of our current times, public perception and the media's role in shaping it. Many aspects of the actual story didn't feel believable to me, but it's part of the whole modern pulp fiction format of the story. Whatever baffling moment...

This doesn't look too good... Isn't this what the opinion have been of the last couple Sono movie teasers watched prior to the release of the movie. Then once the movie hits, it turns out better than expected. I don't think the teaser shows much except for it looking like Sono is continuing to make...

Not very heroic though, is it? I get that Lone Wolf is a killer for hire, but his unique morality is somewhat alien to me. I find that to be a very Japanese thing... Yeah, it's alien to me, as well. But I like seeing stories I don't quite understand. Yeah, I understood that part. :D Yeah, I know. I...

He protects the woman because of his sentimental connection to the mysterious scripture on the piece of wood she was carrying on her. He had no such connection to the other 2 women. I like the story in this one. It shows Feudalism at its most irrational. You know, during Feudalism, the Samurai had t...

So, has anybody here watched 'Au Revoir L'été'?
What did you think?

It's coming out on DVD and Bluray the same date as 'My Man', according to Amazon.jp.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972-Japan) **½ Stylish opener for ultra-violent chanbara series; clumsy storytelling is less assured than artistic direction. Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972-Japan) **½ Episodic sequel, ultra gory set-pieces and memorable villains help at...

The French Connection, like many gritty 70s "classics" hasn't dated terribly well. I think anyone coming to it fresh with 21st century eyes would be underwhelmed. Yeah, I will have to disagree with this. I recently watched The French Connection on Bluray, and just the quality of the way it is shot,...

That's a nice collection of box-sets there, dude. The Japanese get some of the best editions. But that's also because they consume more stuff there, so the companies always give them the extras. I had those 2 Kill Bill Japanese boxes with the T-shirts and toy figures and all that stuff. I ended up s...

Yeah, saw the Japanese release. I dug it. I liked the lush intro at the beginning of the movie. There is some nice visual moments here - Fumi Nikaido standing on the rooftop is a very beautiful shot. I like the over-the-top element of the movie. It's a pretty simple story, really, so I think the mov...

^ Watched this one. I really liked it. Beautifully shot, great cinematography and acting. Very well directed. Interesting topic, and good story. It was definitely a saddening watch for me, seeing these young people engaging in this behavior. I have no problems with orgies, or anything; only this fas...

Japanese DVD and BD release date for My Man was also announced: February 3, 2015. No subs mentioned. - http://www.happinet-p.com/jp3/releases/BIXJ-0157 I wonder if this movie will get some kind of international distribution. I watched the official trailer of it with english subtitles: https://www.y...

Re: Fires on the Plain (Shinya Tsukamoto, 2014)

I watched the 2 preview video clips on YouTube. Very Tsukamoto-ish, with frenetic editing, terrorizing and nerve-wrecking atmosphere. It looks very digital video, but Tsukamoto has been shooting movies in HD-DV since 'Snake of June', after all. Dude keeps on making these low-budget movies - keeps pu...

Haha... Byunghun Lee is in this... It seems now the Koreans have taken the place of the Chinese when it comes to getting crappy roles in crappy Hollywood movies. Yeah, it's sad. But what can you do? The old-timers are disappearing. The 'Out-of-the-Ruins' generation is getting really old, and time flies by very quickly. It's bound to happen, unfortunately. Yeah, I watched this one a while ago. I liked it. It is nicely filmed, and I like how it captures sensuality in a more realistic context. I like that the stylized elements are very subtle, and how it all flows and blends quite naturally. So, it's beautiful to look at while following along with the s...

I ended up watching this remake movie, and it was worse than I expected it to be. To me, it seemed like a totally thrown together mess directed with no passion whatsoever. Well... I understand Spike Lee was simply hired by Hollywood to direct it, like some clerk working a store as a day job. But, it...

Yeah, I think Refn's movies have all been, more or less, good movies. I am very glad he is working on a new project. I was worried it would be harder for him to accumulate funds for a new movie, after 'Only God Forgives' receiving so much crap from people. But, it seems he keeps at it, making movies...
