Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Vampires (USA, 1998) [BD] – 3/5 To my great shame, the only John Carpenter film I have seen in theaters upon release. This was my first time revisiting it and it hold up well as his last good film, even if it can't touch his masterpieces. James Woods delivers some hilariously foul-mouthed and polit...

Lusty Discipline in Uniform (セーラー服色情飼育) (Japan, 1982) [VoD] – 3/5 Middle aged, well dressed professor has a crush on a cute high school girl, starts harassing her with obscene phone calls. And he's the film's hero! It's been a while since I watched this but what I found most disturbing about it was...

Very nice! I strongly suspect this and EXOTIC MASK IN HELL are due for a BD release next year. Probably the only Oniroku Dan BDs I could get legitimately excited about.

Planet of Amoebas (プラネット・オブ・アメーバ) (Japan, 2018) [DVD] - 2/5 Space amoebas from a camouflaged spaceship abduct women and try to mate with them. Certainly a solid enough premise for a schlocky exploitation flick but unfortunately the budget must've been so low that the titular amoebas are literally j...

The Nightingale (Australia/USA/Canada, 2018) [amazon] – 4/5 Gnarly, violent revenge film about an Irish convict in a Tasmanian penal colony in the early 1800s, who, after numerous rapes and the slaughter of her husband and baby , embarks on a quest for revenge. Unfortunately kind of runs out of ste...

Crawl (USA, 2019) [BD] – 2.5/5 Survival horror about two people (a Kaya Scodelario I never heard of before and Barry Pepper from BATTLEFIELD EARTH) trapped in house during a hurricane - with a bunch of alligators. I've always liked director Alexandre Aja's visual style but he hasn't made a great fi...

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

Happinet is releasing a lot of Nikkatsu action/yakuza films from at least January 2020 through March 2020. The full list is here: http://www.happinet-p.com/jp3/releases/category/moviej This isn't a genre/era I am too familiar with, so someone else can figure out what's essential and what's not so hot.

Peanuts (ピイナッツ 落華星) (Japan, 1996) [DVD] – 2.5/5 A minor action/yakuza comedy from Takashi Miike's early V-Cinema days. Riki Takeuchi and Koyo Maeda are the leads. They help a suicidal fish vendor who's up to his neck in debt to a yakuza gang and things escalate from there. It's a decent timewaster ...

I guess we should be glad the films are still legal. And I second the request for a continuation. I'm glad at least a few books like this exist, given the chronic lack of Interviews and commentaries on Japanese catalogue title releases.

This set is getting a "standard edition reissue" from Arrow US on October 29th. No mention of new transfers so expect the same old bullshit. And would you look at that new cover art! What the fuck is that?

In the Shadow of the Moon (USA, 2019) [netflix] – 1.5/5 I've been a fan of director Jim Mickle since MULBERRY STREET (2006) so it wasn't any fun to see him shit the bed with this netflix original. The film starts out as an alright mystery but drops the ball in the third act when it's revealed that ...

Scorsese by Phillips, for incels. Socially relevant, but too slick to have grit, too superficial to be genuinely challenging.

Festival Dispatch - Korean Excursion

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (곤지암) (Korea, 2018) [DCP] - 1.5/5
Found footage hijinks about some youtubers investigating a supposedly haunted (and abandoned) mental asylum for epic clicks. There was a lot of hysteric screeching which kept me mostly awake.

According to a recent interview with Miike , the planned sequels won't happen because the film was a financial flop in Japan. It was way less well received than we expected. (...) Ad Astra (USA, 2019) [DCP] - 3.5/5 I can't remember the last time I've been so torn about a movie. This is 75% beautiful, haunting, poetic, best space cinema in decades. And 25% Michael Bay action, as believable as Armageddon. What on earth were they thinking? It was a very troubled production, wit...

Now as for why they'd upscale a film from 2018 that no doubt is available in HD is anyone's guess.

Not a bad trailer, actually, in my opinion. A number of cool visuals and practical effects on display. Those were the best thing about the first film as well.
