Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

Some good stuff there! I'll happily upgrade Delicate Skillful Fingers to BD and Circuit of Sorrow to retail DVD. Curious about Sex-Crime Coast-Piranha School too. Gendai shofu-ko: seifuku no shita no uzuki (Modern Prostitution: Lust Under a Uniform) is one of Sone's better films - don't believe Weis...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Torso (Italy, 1973) [BD] - 3/5 A bit uninvolving giallo (with exceptional amounts of nudity) turns into a fantastic slasher/thriller during its final third. Worth seeing for that alone. Halloween (USA, 2018) [DCP] - 3/5 Functional, entertaining and old fashioned sequel with very little in the way o...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Outcast Man (日陰者) (Japan, 1972) [TV] - 3/5 Surprisingly good later day Kosaku Yamashita film with a beatiful depiction of honorable Tsuruta and his relationship with lover Kayo Matsuo. This kind of love based sentimentality was rare in the genre. Tsuruta's theme song a bit of a mismatch though, and...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Bewitched (Hong Kong, 1981) dvd 2.5/5 Overall a pretty average movie though. Whaat? This is perhaps my favorite SB horror! Bewitched (Hong Kong, 1981) [DVD] – 4/5 Superb Shaw Brothers horror “based on” "stories" by Chinese and Thai men who became victims of black magic. As usual, a woman (a dumped ...

Scissor Dick (本当はエログロいイソップ寓話 シザーチンP) (Japan, 2018) [DVD] - 2.5/5 A highly anticipated film for me and ultimately a disappointment. Director Naoyuki Tomomatsu again uses much of the running time for insane rants about misandry and how anti-molestation laws will lead to mankind's extinction. There's ...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Railroad Man (鉄道員) (Japan, 1999) [VoD] - 1/5 Old man devoted his life to work instead of family and spends most of the movie seeing b&w and sepia toned flashbacks. Popular Takakura movie could just as well have been women's sappy TV drama because nothing sets it apart from those other than the occa...

Banned Book: Carnal Prayer Mat (発禁 肉蒲団) (Japan, 1975) [VoD] - 4/5 Cool. Added this to my watch list, though I don’t think will enjoy it as much as you did. I’m not a hot a huge fan of period-pink comedies (Sone’s Secret Chronicle: Prostitute Market is an exception), and I don’t really share the com...

The Lowlife (最低。) (Japan, 2017) [VoD] – 3.5/5 Exceptionally unbiased examination of women involved in the Japanese AV industry, based on a book by the AV superstar Mana Sakura. The film follows a young AV actress (Kokone Sasaki) whose narrow minded mother keeps putting blame on her over her career ...

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

I have 7 of their discs so far. Only BTN has the scaled down pamphlet. That must be something they started doing recently. Perhaps, but the older Wakamatsus wouldn't have them available anyway. I think Japan only started producing them in the late 70s. I've seen some for older films, like Bruce Lee...

Fist of the North Star (北斗の拳) (Japan, 1986) [VoD] - 3.5/5 Classic violence anime in post apocalypse setting, easily enjoyed even by a non-anime fanatic such as me. Kenshiro is basically an animated Bruce Lee gone into Sonny Chiba mode I always thought Kenshiro mostly looks like Sylvester Stallone. ...

Tokyo Vampire Hotel (東京ヴァンパイアホテル 映画版) (Japan, 2017) [VoD] - 1.5/5 Here goes Sion Sono down the Dario Argento path, not just in filming a Dracula film but quality wise too. Two vampire families are in war, and where else than in near future pop Tokyo. Too bad the bargain basement aesthetics are at c...

I think you are being kind with you ratings for the Game series. Like many Matsuda films, I think they are watchable but underwhelming. I liked the 1st one the best, but the action scenes are ridiculous with Matsuda's opponents having worse aim than a blind Storm Trooper. The 2nd one has a good open...

Gendai onibabako: Satsu ai (Japan, 1973) [TV] - 4/5 A 300 year old witch agrees to assassinate a dead-sick businessman and his ignorant sexy wife upon the former's own request - the kills are to take place in separate locations at the same time. Just bought A Pool Without Water and Blow the Night from Amazon. I thought I was late with this, but both still came with the scaled down theatrical pamphlet relicas. Blow the Night (“BLOW THE NIGHT ! " 夜をぶっとばせ) (1983) Incoherent, yet fascinating youth docu-drama from Japan's golden era of educational problems. Agreed about Bamboo House. All I remember is that it was pretty underwhelming. Shishiotachi no natsu (獅子王たちの夏) (Japan, 1991) [VoD] – 2.5/5 Slow-burn, very 90s yakuza tale of a young hood (Sho Aikawa) and a family man gangster (Koji Matoba) belonging to rival gangs. Hard Ticket to Hawaii (USA, 1987) [DVD] – 3/5 Ridge Forrester goes against drug dealers in a worthy, but cinematically even more inept trash companion for Samurai Cop and Miami Connection. The action is alright, but the acting and storytelling even worse, more DTV-like than in the fore-mentioned fi...
