Re: Early Bruce Li and other Taiwanese indies - where did they play?

Alpha is an interesting one. HK based, all their productions seem to be a) Taiwan and b) no recorded HK release. Then Jimmy Shaw gets his name plastered over the VHS releases of the Jackie Chan/Lo Wei films as though he made them!

Re: Early Bruce Li and other Taiwanese indies - where did they play?

I've often wondered where HK ends and Taiwan began - it seems HK producers made films in Taiwan as standard, but does that make them Taiwanese?

Early Bruce Li and other Taiwanese indies - where did they play?

Since Markway is persona non grata on Kung Fu Cinema's forums, I thought I'd post it here This applies to many other indies besides, but I thought I'd focus on these. Before signing with Eternal in 1976, Bruce Li made a bunch of movies for Taiwanese based producers, including Jimmy Shaw's Alpha Supe...

The Dragon's Snake Fist (1981) Dragon Lee is at it again, in a more restrained than usual outing. Although this is apparently about the clash between the Snake FIst School and the Crane Fist School, we don't really see much of either style, as the emphasis is more on tae kwon do style kicks, and la...

Killer Constable (1980) Effective Shaws film, with Chen Kuan-Tai as a police officer on the trail of looted royal treasure. The gorgeous Bava/Argento-ish photopgrahpy makes this feel a lot fresher then the films coming out from Chang Cheh at the same time, and the violence is for the most part gritt...

AFAIK, Nora was never Bruce's mistress...pity, I like to think she'd kept her cool in a crisis more than Betty Ting Pei.

Fury in Shaolin Temple (1982) Poor Gordon Liu really needed a better agent judging from this Korean/HK trash, which sees him and one-time Bruce Lee clone Chang Il-Do as two long-lost brothers (or something) learning kung fu from different masters. Contrary to the credits, Phillip Ko is not worthy o...

The Brave Archer (1977) First part of a 3-film adaptation of Jin Yong's Legend of the Eagle Shooting Hero, starring Alexander Fu Sheng, and nearly everyone on Shaws' payroll. The early more macabre sections (with skull piercings, skin ripping and blindings galore) are much more engrossing then the l...

Drunken Master, Slippery Snake (1979) The first 10 minutes of this film, with Yuen Siu Tien pretending to a blushing bride (no, really!) suggest that he will be the main star, but then the focus shifts more to Cliff Lok, who isn't nearly as good an actor. But it's just as well, as Yuen is so extensi...

Instant Kung Fu Man (1977) Early kung fu comedy with John Liu and Hwang Jang-Lee kept on the sidelines for the most part whilst two Yip Fei-yangs (one a crook, one a lazy Shaolin student) mess around - whatever happened to him anyway? It's actually fairly funny but lacks the universal appeal that ma...

FIST OF DEATH (1982) Lame South Korean Bruce/Jackiespolitation yarn with Kim Tae-Chung looking only like Bruce when he bugs his eyes out. The Jackie clone is even weaker. In a way, this is a Fist of Fury knock-off with the Ching Wu school vs the...well, the dialogue says "YMCA" but the logo on the s...

I love The Hot, The Cool and The Vicious purely due to nostalgia.

The subs on the old UK VHS (missing from their DVD!) refer to Tommy Lee's character as "The Living Pluto."

On the bright side, it has an awesome pirated soundtrack of John Barry, Ennio Morricone and Pink Floyd.

Plus, Mars gets to be the first Bruce Lee clone!

The 2004 re-master of MofFG looks worse than the 2002 non-anamorphic DVD, as the negative had deteriorated significantly.

Definetly one of my favourite movies, and the pirated soundtrack introduced me to my favourite band, Tangerine Dream!
