Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Argo (USA, 2011) [Hulu] - 3/5 Not bad thriller by Ben Affleck, but I don't quite get the high praise. The last 20 minutes is the most intense part, though almost entirely fictional in a film advertising itself as true story. That's quite ok in the name of entertainment; stealing the honour from the...

Creed (2015-USA) **½ Stallone's sympathetic reprisal of Rocky is the linchpin of this otherwise ordinary boxing drama. Without him there'd be nothing to see. Michael Jordan is better here than in Black Panther, but his performance doesn't scream franchise. It'll be interesting to see how the sequel ...

Year of the Dragon (1985-USA) **½ Arresting, though uneven thriller set in New York's Chinatown. Rourke overcomes his obvious miscasting (he's about 15 years too young for the part), but its the melodramatics, inconstant characters that prove more damaging, and prevent this from being a first-rate g...

Should be safe with Arrow then.

The Mask (1994-USA) **½
Enjoyable, larger-than-life cartoon cemented Jim Carrey's star status.
Imaginative special effects and wacky sense of humour are fun throughout,
but uneven tone prevents it from hitting the bull's eye.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The 5.1 audio on Olive's Foxy Brown BD sounded a bit trange to me... dialogue tended to be low, and music really loud. No mono available. I wonder if Arrow sounds better or if the film really is supposed to sound this strange? Can't recall ever hearing a movie sound like that before... According to...

I didn't care for High Risk.

One of Jet's poorest movies from this era.

Disagree about Chingmy Yau though.

The Last Boy Scout 2/5 Loud, brash actioner with Bruce Willis as an obnoxious P.I. investigating NFL gambling corruption. Some flashy moments ala director Tony Scott but largely forgettable fare . No. Just. No. I hear people say this a lot, and I always think, "I LOVE Coffy!" LOL. I also preferred F...

All Over The World (1993, Hong Kong) internet 1/5 A writer is sent to Taiwan, Japan, France, and Macau to write a story on the red light districts. Lots of random T&A and situations that are neither funny or all that sexy, despite the full nudity. Rena Murakami has a short, fully clothed cameo (sho...

Yes, Peking Opera Blues is the better of the two; a masterpiece, IMHO.

Shanghai Blues (1984, Hong Kong) internet ? I really wish I could find a subbed copy of this, as the Chinese version made me laugh and smile all throughout. Sally Yeh in particular is hilarious with her facial expressions and physical comedy, but Kenny Bee and Sylvia Chang are great as well. I real...

Kenny Bee was actually a pretty big star back in the day.

One of the first male pop star-actor crossovers.

He was in the band The Wynners with Alan Tam.

Popular in Taiwan, too.

Celestial Pictures used a censored master for Clans of Intrigue.

I think the only way to see it uncut now would be an old 35mm print, unless Celestial can be persuaded to do a new version for HD.

The BBFC cut 9:34 from this back in 1993.

The second most censored Cat-3 title yet to have been passed in the UK.

Raped By an Angel lost 11:02 back in 1997, although 6:20 of that were pre-cuts after two separate rejections.

Silent Trigger (1996-Canada-UK) **½ Russell Mulcahy's atmospheric thriller about a sniper; and the last of Dolph Lundgren's cinema-worthy output. No classic, but essential if you're a fan of the big Swede. Co-star Gina Bellman is hot, her acting less so. Bad Neighbours (2014-USA) * Originally called...
