Rare Exports (Santa's gonna eat you!)
Has Finland finally managed its first true epic in 55 years?
Quotes from Todd Brown's review
A Christmas story for people who hate Christmas stories...
...It's the sort of good spirited adventure story laced with genuine menace and frights and danger which have basically been regulated out of existence by the MPAA in later years...
...Is Helander the next Joe Dante? No, not yet, but he probably will be soon.

Re: Rare Exports (Sitges Best Film of the Year)
The film is quite good. Joe Dante comparison is spot on, Tim Burton comparison on the other hand is a disgrace considering what kind of disgusting crap Burton has been directing in the recent years.
Rare Exports is an entertaining christmas fantasy and horror comedy. This is the original Santa, the one whose dining habits included eating children. The film isn't too graphic, though - it's rated '13' in Finland, a bit higher is most other countries. It is full of hilarious course language, though. Apparently the UK distributor went for subtitle censorship and did not translate the f-words. That's a shame, as the film loses a ton of comedy and one liners.
Glad to see it's been well received: the entire world from festival audiences to mainstream critics love it, with one single exception: The UK. I don't know if the "censorship" affected by the British press seems to hate the film.
Rotten Tomatoes rating:

Not that I suggest anyone to be stupid enough to left critics' opinion affect their viewing decisions, but it's interesting to follow what the reception is like. Currently 89% positive.

The original dialogue would be more like 40

A few things about the film:
- It's a guy film. There isn't a single female character in the film.
- The old men running naked in the snow were members of a Norwegian male chorus.
- The film was mostly shot in Norway, not Finland. Finland doesn't have the kind of mountain landscapes the director wanted.
- There will not be any deleted scenes on any dvd. The director shot the film Hitchcock style, exactly what he needed and nothing else. Every scene he shot was used in the final cut.

US BD review:

I wonder if the subs are more accurate than in the UK theatrical print.
UK and Nordic BD's are also coming out soon. DVD only in Japan.
