Anyway, R2UK of Welcome to Dongmakgol coming from Showbox Entertainment. Have they been around for long? I've never heard of them.

Isn't there a Korean company called Showbox? Could it be the same company?

I'll look out for this :) I wonder if they'll release many films over here?

Still waiting for a good western release of My Sassy Girl (directors' cut), so hopefully that will be released in 2007 ...

Again, what's wrong with the Korean DVD (apart from that subs issue that is really just a matter of 5 minutes to get used to)?

Cheers Eva.

If the cover art is anything to go by it should be a decent release, which of course it's not.

A Korean friend has been saying I should see this for months. Any ideas why there isn't a HK DVD???

I dont know what the deal is with MSG and why it isnt being released properly outside Korea.

Is there a director's cut korean version anymore?

I have the HK edko version, which is the director's cut I think, but with some soundtrack changes...

I also have the limited 2003 yupki girl version, with the dvd heartshaped soundtrack, but it's still sealed... and not planning on opening it either...
I wanna see how much a sealed version would be worth in 20 years orso :)

The problem with MSG is the music.
There are new bits of music in the DC, and they can't be sold outside of Korea (for some unknown legal reasons).

Which confirms my findings. When Edko released the DC, the korean company tried to stop them. If they're still selling it, it probably means it's a new batch with the DC picture and music from the TC.

I'd love to see some Showbox titles with english-subtitled extras... :)

Some sites used this name to describe DVD.com (Rarescope/Vengeance Video) releases.

Cine-Asia (Showbox) look to be a label to keep an eye on. They seem to be replacing HKL as the number 1 UK HK cinema label. Even if all their releases have so far been beaten elsewhere.

They seem to have historically concentrated on Adult titles: http://www.sendit.com/video/browseby/di ... 0000001500

Cine-Asia website: http://showboxmediagroup.com/portfolio/2/12/

Cine-Asia Asian titles released/coming soon:

* Apartment 1303 (Out Now)
* Welcome to Dongmakgol (Out Now): http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/ ... kgol2.html
* Dragon Tiger Gate - 2 Disc SE (Out Now): http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/ ... -gate.html
* Flash Point - 2 Disc SE (Out 31/03): http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/flashpoint.html

Cine-Asia Asian titles not yet released:

* Chocolate

Interesting:

Another interesting thing is that they also had trailers for other Premier Asia / Contender titles..are these companies linked or did Cine Asia / Showbox buy them out?

I believe it's a coincidence, they're not connected to the Korean company.

Showbox release loads of porn titles... but apart from the aforementioned there's the Japanese film 'APARTMENT 1303' (don't know anything about it...?)

Thanks Mark.

It's owned by Tartan in America and going by the spec. alone (I've not bothered to read reviews) they're identical except the Tartan also has DTS:

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=12608

Here are reviews for Dragon Tiger Gate:

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/reviews/r ... User=11436
http://www.sexgoremutants.co.uk/tigergateuk.html

And one for Apartment 1303:

http://www.sexgoremutants.co.uk/apt1303uk.html

Both sound like decent releases for the label (even if they're not the best reviews ever written). Dragon Tiger Gate has an unusual DD5.1 track though:

224kbps DD 5.1 Cantonese track

I've never seen DD5.1 go that low before. I cannot find one for "Welcome to Dongmakgol".

Are you saying the first batch of edko's MSG dc has the original korean music on it, and afterwards they had to change it!?
I was under the impression that I just had the version with 'new' music, and thus havent watched the edko disc yet... (got it as a gift from my mom-in-law-except-for-the-law-part)

Just got the R2 release of Flash Point today. I'll go through things quickly:

The Good:

Picture - shows more information from all sides which the HK DVD doesn't (its picture format has "black lines" present on the sides which blocks what you should see otherwise)

Subs - Ported directly from the HK DVD, but I noticed some lines being re-subbed properly and intact to each other that otherwise goes less explained as well as separately (from one piece to the other) when it's meant to be whole lines on the HK DVD. This great subtitling also goes for the extras as well.

Audio - Includes a DD 2.0 stereo track which I find very pleasant!

The Bad:

Picture - Slightly blurred compared to the HK DVD.

Audio - DTS missing and the DD 5.1 track seems a bit muffled compared to that on the HK DVD.

I'll posts some screen caps later today.

I heard somewhere that the DD5.1 is only 224Kbps, that's super low for a 5.1 soundtrack. I think it was Eva who told me.

I've never come across a 5.1 soundtrack that low before. Thanks for the mini review Beat. I was going to pick up the BD but if I wanted the DVD I'd get the DD R1. If you post the captures in the Review thread someone who has the DD DVD can match them.

Yes, 224Kbps is very low for a 5.1 track. Bear in mind that DD2.0 tracks are normally 224Kbps or 192Kbps.

Prior the lowest bitrate that I had seen on a 5.1 track was 384Kbps, which is common on R2 Euro/R4 releases which cram several language tracks onto a disc.
