Live and Let Die

Top: R1 SE
Bottom: R1 UE

SOMEONE GOT CARRIED AWAY WITH THE CONTRAST HERE!

This transfer, for me, is extremely disappointing. I've seen LALD many times before and always thought the grain was part of the whole look of the film. It looked like a natural film grain and not noise from a bad transfer. When I heard the new transfer eliminated the grain I was worried. But then I thought maybe the original was wrong and had transfer noise and not film grain. Maybe Lowry could bring out the true appearance? I was wrong, the movie is way too soft. Even worse is that there are huge white out areas. The opening gun barrel is terrible for this. I find it hard to rate this UE over the SE. It is a lot cleaner but the loss of the original look of the film and the extreme contrast boosting can't be forgotten.

UE looks better IMO but why is the background in the "Live and Let Die" title sequence in the UE shot RED whereas the in the SE it's black?

The old disc is better. The UE is awfully contast boosted and blurry.

Both have different flaws, but I'd say that the UE might be better overall. It has a smoother appearence and richer colours.

The SE may have print damage, darker features, ghosting, incorrect ratio and interlacing, but I prefer it because it's sharper and I'm more confident in the colours.

Shame as the UE had potential but Sony had to fuck it up as usual

I don't agree. SE looks much better in that shot. US looks like a mess.

I think it's important to note that durning the end credits, the background is black with a flaming skull (just like, if not exact the opening of the titles where "Live and Let Die" appear) However the end titles version looks good, black and red, and does not suffer from the same insane ammount of red all over the image.... at least be consistent.

Good news everyone! It looks like the Blu-Ray release does not have that insane boosting of contrast according to captures made by DVDbeaver.

Lately, most of their new Blu-Ray reviews use actual screencaps of the disc (large and uncompressed and whatnot). Though, I think there's still one guy from their staff who takes digital pics of his screen.

If anyone has access to the new blu-rays I highly recommend the new live and let die BD as it is now the best version out there. The title sequence has been corrected and the contrast boosting and clipping is non-existant. It looks fantastic, no visible DNR either! :mrgreen:
