Tremors

Top: Franchise collection DVD

Tremors has seen its way into the world of high definition and the results are somewhat mixed for me. On one hand there is a lot of great detail to
be found. The textures on clothing, rocks and dirt, hair, etc all really pop and colours couldn't be better. But the downside to this transfer is a large one.
Once again, as seen on other releases, there has been Noise Reduction applied which removes all the grain and gives a pasty and platic like
feel to the image. In order to compensate for the loss of detail, edge enhancement was added to try and sharpen things up. Of course like
every other goddamn time, this never results in a better image. Why studios continue to do this especially in the HD is beyond me, but this
is becoming a big problem. Studios are utilizing old DVD transfer that had EE and DNR but weren't as visible as they are now. To me, this is like the
jump from LD to DVD, you had some old LD transfers popping up on DVD with non-anamorphic letterbox transfers. Really it took quite a few years to
correct those so I hope this new problem ceases immediately. This could've been a 9/10 or maybe even 10/10 for me but it drops to 7/10 now.

Just been watching the extras of this very film not 2 minutes ago

I watched the HD DVD the other night and hell its a great transfer. Yes its got some edge enhancement and some noise reduction, but it blows the dvd away by a mile so in my eyes its a superb upgrade for me.

Plus I had the very old non anamporhic dvd so the HD DVD is a revelation really compared to it.

These screen caps kind of show the noise reduction they used a bit more than when you watch the film, still no idea why they did it unless it was grainy. Still in the end I was more than happy with shelling out on this iflm again, the sound also to me sounded better than the old standard dvd.

It's a pity they're using a HD Master also used for the DVD Master.

Is this only available on a box set? I really don't care about the sequels. They're not needed IMO.

The 2005 remaster seen above is only available in the Franchise Collection but for the upgrade to anamorphic widescreen it's worth it. I may have matching captures from the old LD transfer up here soon.

oh I see, yeah it is. I'm sure eventually they'll release the others probably with similar picture results on HD as part one and two were both remastered at the same time with similar results on DVD.

Part 2 is great

3 is fine and 4 is fun.

None are bad films, but none are as good as part 1

This film will be one to watch when it comes to other places, as the transfer may be different with less processing done on it. May not either

Universal also own the UK rights so the UK release is likely to be the same.

I wish I had seen it

it was pulled before the second episode aired (I think) still I want to see it one day, never found it anywhere to even watch Online (well not watchable quality, you got me interested again, will have a new look about as it seems to be many places).

If they released the series on dvd I would blind buy it from the little I saw of the show, it looked stupid fun, much like Tremors should be.

I was able to find a website that does "mouse-over" comparisons, just follow the links I posted in the comparison. Also shows how badly I matched them

Anyway I'm gonna be adding this to many of my comparisons. I'll only bump a few though.

Die Hard, 2001 and 40 Year Virgin are all working. It's just this one that doesn't work for me, all you see are the HD captures. I've tried all of them.
