Police Story 2 HKL R2 vs Dragon Dynasty R1 vs IVL

Post by saltysam »

Ok before Chenlung or someone comes along and tells me the frames are a millisecond off or something i know, but i got the DD this morning and am away most of the weekend so i thought i'd throw up a quick comparison up which might be useful 8) note the DD is the longer version of the movie.

And once again, the IVL disc features a superior image to DD's. But it looks much better than DD's PS1. Between DD and HKL, DD wins easily.

Horrendous cropping aside, the HKL seems more pleasing in colour to me. It'd be interesting to see how the DD holds up to the IVL. Hopefully, it won't be the gulf in quality that was DD's Police Story DVD

Yes, the framing is much improved on the DD, but the colours are clearly wrong.

The blacks and blues now appear grey and once again skintones are pinkified.

We need IVL caps please.

I'm colour blind and still I think the DD version looks off. I dread to think what Brian White's eyes are like

I hope Joy Sales release the boxset with the mono tracks in sync this time

DD's looks almost identical to IVL's (soft and hazy transfer) but IVL's looks a little more natural. HKL's should be avoided at all costs. Is there any explanation as to why the HKL is so badly cropped?

I think HKL is a case of someone - either at HKL or Media Asia - goofing in the telecining. However, someone also knew about it because the transfer was further squished to 2.27:1, the theatrical trailer was cropped to 1.85:1 and the box actually says 2.35:1 - most HKL's at that time said 16:9 regardless of ratio.

Magnficent Warriors was another transfer with the same cropping issue but at least they left it unsquished - bizzarly, HKL's self-produced promotional trailer for MW IS 2.35:1

It's alarming how bad the quality control at HKL was at that time. By 2003, their titles were fewer in number and less exciting but the transfers were better.

Odd DD stretching aside an easy one for the DD.

Hard to say if the image was pinkified, but believe it or not, it seems to be fine. Annoying green line at the side however. It's got a dodgy presentation of the Japanese version instead of the preferred HK version - a big negative for me :( .

The original trailer on the HKL DVD isn't cropped, it's just incorrectly squished into 1:78:1.

Yeah, I don't like the extended version either.

Well...

I wouldn't mind if all 4 versions: Hong Kong, Taiwanese, English and Japanese were presented on Blu-Ray Disc(s) but Japanese with the incorrect ending? It's really off-putting that it's just 'another' version. I hate these situations, such a waste and it's really demotivating.

How's the mono?

*Adding IVL caps*

DD is edge-enhanced and pinkified. Avoid.
IVL is still the best IMO.

I see the almost exact same amount of EE on both discs (except maybe the last cap).

And since IVL is out of sync as usual, I'd recommend to avoit it. Unless of course if DD is also out of sync.

I might get the DD's and try to live with IVL's part III till someone gives us a decent release. I was thinking about the Mega Star disc but I hear the audio isn't so great. Can anyone confirm???

Yeah, IVL is easily the best, proper flesh tones.

Still think the colours aren't quite right, blacks aren't pure, the blues and greens of those suits turn pale grey, but regardless the best of the three overall.

The pinkifying on PS2 looks a lot more subtle than DD's release of the first film but in any case why do they do it? Unless Harvey has a certain fetish...

Ahh finally IVL screens. DD and IVL look almost identical except of course the pinkifying. Even the pinkifying isn't that pink. I'd agree its not as bad as PS1. Between the IVL and DD, IVL wins. I'll avoid HKL's.

The IVL is surely the best one so no need to "up-grade".

In fact I'm not buying any standard DVD's anymore, because in a very short time everything will be released in High Definition and will make standard DVD's look like crap. So why waste your money ?

There's no way EVERYTHING will be reissued in HD.

And the IVL has OOS sound, a serious headache for the viewer

Is the Joy Sales reissue of the PS trilogy still OOS?

Would've been easy to fix.

Couldn't care less about HD. So many great films haven't even been released on dvd yet. And I can't imagine HD doing any good audio wise.
