I prefer the look of the R1 (overall a warmer look) they must be from different prints.

I think that's the understatement of the century Grim and I am left absolutely flabbergasted that anyone sound of mind can look at those comparison grabs and actually think the R1 release has the better transfer.

The HKL is an easy winner. The Columbia is mince.

Can't tell if the HKL has been pinkified without an IVL comparison, but it doesn't look bad on these caps.

I never liked the film, but out of interest how's the mono?

Original or downmix?

Well, there's a very distinct lack of any sort of red tint in the skintones of the HKL grabs (the Columbia has far redder skintones) so I'd say the signs are pretty good there.

In the last cap it's easy to see the HKL wins by a mile.

Is the English dub on the HKL DVD the original? I don't like this particular dub but the other Lo Wei films had fun dubs

"MY HEART IS THROBBING!" :D.

Is the mono genuine?

HKL doesn't seem to be affected but as you say Mark, it's impossible to know for sure without the untampered IVL (or Geneon) captures.

Columbia has two advantages: It's got the original credits (despite being the export English ones) and it's not missing the ending.

How are HKL's subtitles?

I'll add the Eastern Heroes captures :).

BTW, the captures aren't exact. If you want, I'll repost the Columbia captures too so they match the HKL ones?

Just looking at Salty's grabs you can see the HKL grabs don't exhibit any reddening of skintones at all. This isn't to say the IVL won't have different skintones than the HKL, but when you consider how pale the skintones are in the grabs above, if the IVL is actually "less red" JC and co. would be looking like Gwailo's.

What's the big deal about having the original title cards or not with all these HK flicks?

I don't think it's anal. FH isn't so bad but I hate it when the title cards have AKA's crudly slapped on - see Fortune Star's release of Hand Of Death and the Fox Bruce Lee remasters.

How's the HKL mono? (I know this was asked before, but it's really the only thing that matters now. The tranfer looks good to me, and I can live with the title cards)

Tigerstyles:
Don't take this the wrong way (I appreciate your participation), but your caps are in the wrong aspect ratio:

Not even one special feature on the HKL. What a shame!

Coming to this two years on, there are odd bits on the HKL where the foley is out of sync. This flaw is not on the Columbia's Cantonese track

I can back that up. Obviously the HKL is sharper, but I prefer the colours from the R1 version.

We still need a release of this with the original opening credits!
