Once Upon A Time In China 3: HKL vs IVL vs HK Vidéo

Post by tom2681 »

HKL and IVL caps borrowed from DVD-Heaven.
The original comparison can be found here:
http://web12.dvd2web.de/ouatic/ouatic.htm
(hope they don't mind).

Yes. I know it's not the exact same frame.
I think the HKV disc isn't too bad considering that it didn't use an HD print.

The HK Vidéo disc uses a Media Asia print with different (warmer) colours.

From a purely technical point of view, I'd say IVL is the winner.
HKV picture is warmer and more pleasing to the eye overall.
HKL is vertically squished (it's not a screencap issue).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Easily IVL is the winner.

Followed by HKV then HKL.

warmer colours of the IVL
Warmer ? The IVL is blueish. That's not exactly warm, is it ?

Doh! I meant to say HK Video ;) On the other hand the IVL image is clearly superior to the HKL.

I'd choose the IVL also. Might as well eventually buy the boxset.
(There are other IVL/Fortune Star boxsets I'm buying first.)
I'm back AGAIN.
Film grain is a good thing dammit! Say NO to DNR/EE!

Agreed HKV is the best. I own the 3 HKL OUATIC DVDs and the box set. I now watch the box set and have kept the HKLs for the extras.

Agree with whom?

Everyone else prefers the IVL.

Is Brad agreeing with me ?
That'd be a first... :D

Nah, the IVL really is the best, no doubt about it.
It just looks weird, blueish and washed-out, that's all.

Yep I was. I like the HKV best as the warm colours are much nicer.

That said the actual IVL DVD doesn't look half as bad as the ones above.
