It's (ironically) funny that the only acting Oscar went to Kim Basinger when her five male co-stars were all more deserving (yet not even nominated). 1997 was a farce.

PCU (1994-USA) *½
Pretty Crappy and Unfunny; an Animal House for the 90s but tamer and blander.

I,The Jury 2/5
Early 80's sex and violence update of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer played by an overly smug and confident Armand Assante.Barbara Carrerra is the doctor running a sex clinix who's soon disrobing for Hammer. Worth a watch.
The Witch 1/5
Set in 1630 New England this is retentious shite masquerading as a "horror film." Boring rubbish but it's been universally praised by critics so what do i know?

Ash Vs The Evil Dead Season One 3/5
Bruce Campbell unexpectedly returns to his signature role in a tv show no less which works far better than you'd expect. The half hour format works well as it doesn't stop for a second but it does suffer from repetition fatigue until the final 3 episodes. Plenty of grue and gore effects, i'll be catching season two.
10 Cloverfield Lane 3.5/5
Taut thriller. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is involved in a car crash and wakes up chained to a wall in a sparse room. She soon meets her captor John Goodman (excellent here) who claims there's been some sort of nuclear attack and that her and the one other guest have to stay in this underground bunker to stay alive. After a while she begins to doubt his story.Well worth seeing

Wild Geese II (1985-UK) **½
Media baron Robert Webber hires mercenaries Scott Glenn and Edward Fox (good fun as plummy ex-army officer) to break Laurence Olivier (as Rudolf Hess!) out of Spandau prison. Surprisingly enjoyable action fare, despite far-fetched premise.

A Good Man (2014-USA) **
Serviceable DTV of the month for Steven Seagal; he's done worse.

Species (1995)

Very much a film for teenage boys before they watch proper sex and horror films. A lot of fun, but some awful CGI that would shame a PS1 game in the finale.

6/10

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992-USA) ***
About as good as a filmed play can be; scorching adaptation of David Mamet's bitter view of sales life.
First rate cast; Jack Lemmon was robbed at Oscar time.

I keep meaning to see GLEN ROSS; Lemmon's character was the inspiration for Gil in The Simpsons.

Ladybugs (1992-USA) **
Rodney Dangerfield coaches a young girls' soccer team.
Premise has plenty potential, but there aren't anywhere near enough laughs, and the innuendos are a bit iffy in a family movie.

Comically dumb, B-grade action thriller wastes better than average cast.

Dopey, incoherent espionage-actioner; tolerable if you switch your brain off.

Exterminator 2 1.5/5
Robert Ginty returns as John Eastland.trashy incoherent sequel, clearly plagued by production problems, they've barely salvaged a movie from it. Strangely watchable though.

Trick R' Treat 3/5
Decent halloween horror anthology

Blood Father 2.5/5
Mel Gibson is a tough ex con trying to go straight who has to return to the fold in order to protect his wayward daughter from murderous mexican gangsters. Good to see Mel back in action but the film itself isn't great.

Sniper 2 (2002-USA-Hungary) **
The undervalued Tom Berenger returns as the titular shooter in a serviceable, somewhat belated sequel that was, like several other Tri-Star films of the era, filmed for theatrical release, but dumped on DVD instead. East European setting signals budget conscious production.

Note: Apparently, the Serbian characters all speak Hungarian (because they used Hungarian actors), and all the uniforms, street signs etc., were obviously Hungarian, too. Seems like the filmmakers didn't give a shit.

Jackie Brown (USA, 1997) [BD] - 5/5
I find it impossible to put Tarantino's best four films (Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2) in order because they are all wonderful in different ways. This one's got amazing characters that have more depth than those of any other Tarantino film. You could start watching the film from any scene and you'd probably end up sitting till the end. Performances, soundtrack, writing, direction are all wonderful. A masterpiece *.

* in my opinion, that is. My girlfried fell asleep before Beaumont got shot

Drive Hard (2013-Australia-USA) **
Forced action-comedy in which bank robber John Cusack uses driving instructor Thomas Jane as his getaway; bickering, shooting, and chasing ensues. Has its moments, but the DTV status is revealing.

The List of Adrian Messenger (1963-USA) **
Plodding, blackly comic mystery is sabotaged by smug, distracting (and sometimes fake) star cameos.
A straight arrow film with George C. Scott as an upper crust investigator would've been most welcome.

I remember seeing that film a few years ago, I thought it was OK :) The reveal of the cameos at the end was a bit cheesy though

Out of the Furnace (2013-USA-UK) **½
A steel worker, just out of prison for vehicular manslaughter, tracks down his brother's killer.
Grim, gritty drama; top-notch cast (Woody Harrelson again proving how terrifically menacing he can be) punches across familiar, one-note script.

Wake in Fright (1970-Australia-USA) *½
Tedious, pointless drama about an unsympathetic snob who falls in with a bunch of drunken Kangaroo hunters.
This is supposed to say something about the Australian male, apparently. Not likely to be endorsed by their tourist board.
The hunt scenes are partly real, and I confess I FF'd thru them.
The local animal welfare endorsed the film, but I'm not convinced we needed to see the slaughter in a work of fiction, lest one for whom the plight of the animals isn't its prime focus.

Mountain of the Cannibal God (Italy, 1978) [DVD] - 2/5
Passable jungle adventure features decent locations and a good climax, but ultimately isn't that interesting. Story and characters are standard stuff, and the film is missing the atmosphere of the better cannibal movies. At around 100 minutes it's also longer than it needs to be. Probably best remembered for Ursula Andress, who does undress in the film.

The Commander (1988-Germany-Italy) **
Lewis Collins (and band of hired guns) is hired to destroy an Asian drug plant.
Third in Antonio Margheriti's 'Merc' trilogy is more of the same...
