Dr. No 1982 Uncut NTSC/VHS on ebay

Post by Markgway »

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dr-No-1962-vh ... 3cda385b5f

Word is that this is the ONLY uncut version of Dr. No ever released.

Expensive... but very rare.

Makes me wish I had a VHS player.

How do you figure that? The listing doesnt mention anything about it being uncut (it does say it's rare and hard to find however).
Might take a chance, it does say 111 minutes... hmm.

It was mentioned in this thread here:

Obviously I can't confirm myself.

Cheers for that :) Some interesting stuff there about Goldeneye and TND too...
Although if an uncut print was somehow released 30 years ago I dont know why this couldn't be released on DVD or BD...
Let's hope its the right one (only the 1982 version is uncut). Would be a fine collector's item.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention

No problem. If I had a VHS player I'd be sorely tempted myself. Would be awesome if some collector bought it and converted it to a digital format. Mostly collectors just buy them and then hide them away from us plebs...

The copyright date on the tape cover back says 1982 and the posted image shows the sliding tray packaging. I've seen 1984 editions also on e-bay, so, yeah, you have to watch out. But the seller explicitly states 1982 edition.

Why was it replaced and why hasn't that version been seen since?
Damn good questions!!

EDIT: Listing ended. Doesn't appear to have been sold.

Not sure if it could be digitised in some way or not... (I still have a VHS player). Very strange that this version hasnt been seen since (or indeed previously.. I thought BBFC cuts in the 60's tended to apply worldwide back then?) :dontknow:

I can only assume few are aware of its true value.

Yes, VHS can be digitised. It's not as difficult as it sounds, apparently...
Very strange that this version hasnt been seen since (or indeed previously.. I thought BBFC cuts in the 60's tended to apply worldwide back then?) :dontknow:
AFAIK, the BBFC cut prints were used everywhere... but then again perhaps not? Or maybe Fox used an unofficial master? Who knows?

First VHS to be encoded with Macrovision was in 1984.

This version doesn't appear uncut to me....
In the scene where Bond shoots Dent, originally he was supposed to shoot him 5 times in the back (6 shots in total) which explains Bond's line "You've had your six" but he's shot just twice (once in the back) on the video.
Shame :(

That cut was made before the film was even released. Often the BBFC would delete things at the script stage, then review the rough cuts, once in black-and-white, then again in colour with the music. Sometimes, as with a few of the Hammers, uncut versions turned up in America or Japan. Depends though. From Russia With Love has a really stupid censor cut which is discussed here - http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s2065russjump2.html - and is likely lost forever.

OK fair enough :) I'm not fully sure what I'm supposed to be looking for in terms of cuts as I havent seen the film for quite a while (I guess one obvious one would be the "I'm sure she will amuse the guards" line).

Looks like I don't have an uncut version :( Dr. No's line is "I'm sure the guards will amuse her" not "She will amuse the guards".
Either someone in that thread Mark linked to is lying, or I've wound up with a different version in the 1982 case.
Oh well...

ETA: Is this release the 1984 version? Has a similar cover to mine:

That's a bummer.

Just goes to show how much bullshit (and plain old lies) are out there.

The 1982 and 1984 releases are identified by their copyright date on the back cover.

Hmm.
What does the front cover of the 1984 release look like? I heard they have very similar covers.
I guess I could try copying it and see what happens.
Maybe that guy on the forum has some sort of workprint that was never commercially released. (The copyright date on mine says 1982).
Bit of a shame though :( He (the forum psoter) sounded trustworthy and said he had a rare VHS etc... :icon_suspect: But then again, you'd think those cuts would have been restored over the years.

The poster explicitly stated which release he had... my guess is that it was just another example of fanboy attention-seeking bullshit. Best just treat the tape as a vintage collector's item. The BBFC cuts were probably made to the negative. The trimmed footage may not even exist anymore if some Eon jobsworth chucked it in the bin. Who knows? The only three Bonds ever to be restored to full uncutedness are Thunderball, Licence to Kill, and Casino Royale. Some would add Diamonds Are Forever, but I'm not convinced.

What was cut from Thunderball?
ETA: Just checked out Melonfarmers, 1 small cut of Bond stroking a girl's back.
As Casino Royale (2006) is now uncut I don't see why cuts made to Quantum of Solace can't be restored.

In the UK? No.

Only the most recent one-disc with the '15' certificate.

Whats funny is members on that thread still seem to seriously entertain the idea that Dr. No is 'uncut' when the 'deleted scenes' on Youtube are clearly pisstakes  I'm tempted to join and tell them, because the tape, while rare is NOT uncut as far as I can see. The guy saying otherwise is a liar.
There's a lesson here. Though before I saw it, we (Mark and I) both wondered if maybe Fox used an unofficial master...
