Pretty great film - not quite on par with Scorsese's masterpieces, but (probably) easily his best since Casino (there's a few I haven't seen). I'm not sure if it was intentional, but this pretty much makes a trilogy with Goodfellas and Casino.
Fun culture clash in the theater here in Japan. More than 200 people packed in the premiere on Saturday. In the insanely funny "getting home alive" scene during the second half I was literally crying with silent laughter. Silent, because not one, not one, person in the audience laughed aloud. Reminded me what some Japanese director once said: Japanese audiences are so shy/polite that even in a funny scene they won't laugh unless it's made very obvious that it's a scene where you're allowed to laugh.

Japanese cinemas are remarkably quiet places though - always! In all ways! Love that! People not laughing in comedies is a small price to pay for getting to enjoy 19/20 movies with zero distractions - as if you were the only viewer in the theater. That being said, there was one asshole in Wolf who played with his/her phone during the film two times, but that is extremely rare. Last year I went to movies over 40 times and only once I heard a viewer speak during the film. No one's phone ever rang. No one ever laughed in the wrong spot. Possibly someone played with iPhone but I can't remember. No other distractions. Admittedly most films I see are not the biggest mainstream blockbusters, but still.
