Thanks Eva. Downloaded Eden last night after your recommendation. Looks interesting when I quickly checked out the episode to see what the quality was like.
Will hopefully watch it tonight.

Is my new screen incorrectly calibrated, or does the Japanese Evangelion 1.11 BD haver worse contrast than the 1.01 dvd? Or are the caps wrong? I'm seeing less detail in bright shots.

The following page seems so dubious than I post direct links to the pics, rather than the article
DVD: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-conten ... uray-4.png
BD: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-conten ... uray-5.jpg

Although here we do have extra detail in a dark scene
DVD: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-conten ... uray-2.png
BD: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-conten ... uray-3.jpg

These were Google search resuls. I don't know where to find reliable anime dvd / BD reviews.

Colours have been remastered quite a bit, blues are now lighter and highlights do looked clipped compared to the r2j, but not immensely so. The Blu-ray looks pretty good to me contrast wise, it may be a little too bright though (r2j is a touch dark).

Maybe I should wait for the US (Funimation) and UK (Manga) BD's and see how they look like. Or is it very likely that they will be indentical to the JP BD?

Very very likely they'll be using the Japanese masters BUT should be a lot cheaper (I hope).

Have Manga announced this in the UK? If so I should be able to get it nice and early. I've had GITS 2.0 and Blood: The Last Vampire for the past 2months on Blu-ray but been too busy to review em early! :D

Cool, just put in a request for it. Too early to know for sure when Manga will be releasing it though, I bet.

Damn Manga for putting the original GITS on the BD in a shitty 1080i transfer which is apparently no better than an upscale :'(

I don't like GITS 2.0!

Evangelion

Funimation's cover art is just incredibly ugly. Manga's art is also ugly, and the film is apparently 1.01, not 1.11.

1.11 is the most recent DVD + BD with a new transfer with more footage and some issues fixed.

Hajime no Ippo is fantastic, I keep meaning to start on the manga but at over 880chapters (90volumes) it's a seriously daunting task!

Ippo is a great show indeed, although they recently started a new Ippo show, which I just didn't like as much as the first series.

It's ended already hasn't it? Was only one season/26eps long, another season is in the works so hopefully they'll continue on a season-by-season basis, although I must admit that when the 2nd season was announced a couple of years ago I made a vow not to watch any more Ippo anime until I've read the first 35volumes of the manga.

ok, finally (maybe accidental) comparison shots for US and JP BD's. AsianBDGuide's US gallery and JP gallery include two matching shots, the 1st and the 6th (by JP). If these caps are correct (is it even possible to get BD caps wrong? Somebody please tell me. Shing!) the US disc indeed has more pleasing levels.

This sucks cause I really wanted to buy the JP disc and not the US discs that come with a 2 year delay and incredibly ugly cover arts

I don't know. I stopped downloading the show and other shows when my PC was fucked up, so I should really get myself some newsgroup-subscription to download that stuff...

The highlights are definitely more blown out on the japanese grabs, I've actually had the UK BD here for a while now but have got 3 other titles I have to review first but I'll take a brief look at it tomorrow for you.

Oops, completely forgot about this! I've uploaded a couple of grabs from the UKBD that you can compare to the Japanese grabs at AsianBluRayGuide here, basically the levels look the same or similar (only had a cursory glance) to the US grabs.

Dunno if you know this, but there's a LE release of the BD here in the UK with better packaging (although still not the like the minimalistic Japanese packaging), you might find that more appealing maybe (it looks better than the US packaging at least)? Have a butchers. Of course, if you're not massively fussed about the packaging you could wait a few weeks and no doubt the bog standard UK BD will be cheap as chips in sales (below £10 I bet).

Thanks for the caps.

Yeah, I will go for the better transfer of course, so either UK or US.

Well, if you go for the UK release then the LE packaging is an HMV Exclusive now apparently.
