I've seen "Pink Hip Girl" and I couldn't agree more: Terrific coming-of-age flick with spot-on dialogue, good acting and some decent Roman Porno vibes. There were a couple of similar movies being made during the 70s the Germany, but they are all more or less spoiled by immature humor and/or stupid scripts. "Pink Hip Girl", on the other hand, offers nothing less than perfection. The above mentioned Hitchhiking-scene is also among my favourites. Will probably see it again in the near future.

HungFist, have you watched this movie yet?

The subtitled US-Release is currently avaliable for pre-order.
HK-Flix wrote:Also known as "The Prison Heat", this is one of the most notorious and sought-after titles in the so-called WIP or "women in prison" movie genre. Japanese cinema has produced many classic examples, such as the renowned "Scorpion" series. Here, the director of the infamous "Wife To Be Sacrificed" turns his hand to the genre and the result is a Grindhouse-style gem.

Packed with many eye-opening and unforgettable moments, the movie tells the classic story of the innocent new fish who finds herself trapped in a world of brutality and exploitation. Fighting to preserve her sanity and her life, she soon finds that the very worst offenders are the ones who run the prison. With no one but herself to trust, she decides to fight back, with spectacular results.

No. Konuma fails with a 7 to 2 ratio (plus one ok quality film) according to my experience, so my expectations are not very high. One of the kings of Nikkatsu pink, the irony is that Konuma does posses talent, but it's not in the erotica genre. He has made two great films; the moody and melancholic horror (pink) Woman in the Box II, and the psychological, even slightly beautiful (pink) drama Image of a Bound Girl.

My old Assault review:

Watcher is quite an alright film. It's interesting, especially the last 15 minutes which go pure arthouse, but not anywhere near as good as Tanaka's mini-masterpiece Beauty's Exotic Dance: Torture. Tanaka's films have often been blessed with beautiful cover arts by Geneon.

The right cover-artwork is among the most beautiful I've ever seen, but I guess I already said that somewhere else.
"The Watcher in the Attic" sounds interesting, been on my list for quite sometime now, and since there's also a subtitled US-release available, I may get around to buying it eventually. I faintly recall it being loosely based on an Edogawa Rampo story/novel.

Naked Pursuit (Kofun) (1968)

An escaped prisoner, a suicidial woman, and a hill next to sea. Expect a lot of running up and rolling down, usually in slow motion, as this early pink comes with less than 30 lines of dialogue. But it’s surprisingly captivating considering the elements, even if still nothing too special. The lead actors are both alright, the cinematographer shows more ambition than the studio that produced the film. Slight political undertones are found in the pic as well.

Pathfinder's R1 dvd features a good interlaced transfer. There's scrathes and occasional dirt storms but the contrast and brightness are good and there's no problems with edge enhancement. The print was found from the US distributor Harry Novak's archives and could very well be the last remaing print. Aside original jp audio an english dub - which loads the film with dialogue that doesn't exist in the original version - is includes. Also found on the disc are trailer, stills and a poor commentary track by Luke Y. Thompson & Jess Hlubik.

Sexy Battle Girls (1986)

High school action goes pink. Mirai Asamiya was forced to grow up wearing a chastity belt because her secret weapon already crushed an innocent teacher’s manhood when she was 14 (18 according to Pink Eiga dvd subtitles). Now the time has come to use this same weapon – and a flying dildo – to fight the evil school principal. Sexy Battle Girls is Shin Toho’s attempt to cash in on the popularity of Sukeban Deka II. Unfortunately, with no less than 7 sex scenes there’s not enough time left for even a thorough rip off. The result is an unbalanced mix of sex and copy pasted shots that ends before it really begins. However, the curiosity value remains, the humour is hilarious, and Ichiro Nitta’s soundtrack (that he of course did not score for this specific film) works. Nanno and Akie Yoshizawa also appeared on the original soundtrack, but the new release omits their songs because copy right has finally become reality.

Pink Eiga’s official US release comes with a passable non-anamorphic transfer and burnt in subtitles that are easy to read. Don't expect this film ever to look much better than this on dvd – this ain't a Toei or Nikkatsu production. Extras feature trailers, pictures and text explanations of the film's backgrounds.

Read more about the Sukeban Deka connection here.

S&M Hunter (1986)

Nuns, nunchukus and the man with no name lifted straight from Italian spaghetti westerns is only the beginning of this legendary Shin Toho pink production that turns the conventions of SM films upside down. Shiro Shimomoto plays one eyed rope fighter who is hired to save a hostage from a sadistic girl gang that kindnaps and rapes handsome young men. Add fantastic soundtrack – that only features two melodies – absolutely brilliant dialogue ("I'm a charitable sadist"), and storyline that almost makes sense, and you’ll hardly even get bored during the sex scenes. All served in a tight 60 minute package.

Pink Eiga's dvd features a passable non-anamorphic transfer with burnt in subs. There's a heavy ghosting effect, but otherwise the transfer's weaknesses don't distrack from the film, rather the opposite; it adds to the atmosphere. Being a Shin Toho production, don't expect this ever to look better on dvd. Extras are sparse; only trailers for other films, pictures and biographies.

Star of David (Dabide no hoshi: Bishôjo-gari) (1979)

Norifumi Suzuki made an unexpected move by directing a Nikkatsu pink film in the middle of his hugely successful mainstream period. Basing the film in Masaaki Sato’s manga Suzuki took full use of Nikkatsu freedom and delivered a sexploitation film Toei wouldn’t dare to produce. The story follows an anti hero (Shun Domon) – a young and intelligent gentleman – who captures women uses the basement of his mansion as a torture chamber. As expected from the director, the film is film is well done and comes with plenty of christian and political references. Unfortunately it’s also too long, with the 100 minute running time offering a few rape scenes too many and not quite many enough visual or story highlights. By Nikkatsu standards it's nevertheless more ambitious - and better - than their average genre production. Casting wise the film is remarkable for starring the 1974 Miss Kimono / 1975 Miss Japan Hiromi Namino in a role usually played by unashamed Nikkatsu actresses. Also, Suzuki’s Toei collaborator Bunta Sugawara is seen in a short but hilarious cameo role.

Easter Star / Discotek’s R1 release is a must buy for Norifumi Suzuki fans, even if you don’t like the film. The Outcast Cinema team has recorded a Norifumi Suzuki / Kiichiro Yamashita (host / film critic) commentary for the film, plus a 15 minute Norifumi Suzuki interview. Suzuki talks about differences between Toei and Nikkatsu, how he ended up working with Nikkatsu, and of course the Bunta Sugawara cameo. These extras are not found on the R2J Geneon release. Also included is the original trailer, plus trailers for other Discotek releases. Picture quality is very good, and audio, although a tiny bit harsh, does its job. The cover art is reversible, with uncensored version on the flip side. Unfortunately its not the exact original poster art, but close.

Suzuki interview

Here is an explanation for the cameo: Sugawara appears in the film as a truck driver called Momojiro. This is the chararacter he played in Suzuki's Truck Yaro movies (1975-1979). He also makes a reference to "bath house girls". In most Truck Yaro films Sugawara and Kinya Aikawa stop at their favourite bath house and bring gifts for the girls and have some fun.

Yeah, me. :D
Even got the author to sign it personally for me (met him on this year's Nippon Connection in Frankfurt).
I'm not through yet, but so far it's a great read, with tons of information and even more great pictures. It's mainly about Pink Cinema and filmmakers like Masaru Konuma, Mamoru Watanebe, Hisayasu Sato (with some additional intel on Roman Porno) and NOT what you now call Pinky Violence and Toei Bad Girl Cinema.

It's now the fourth book I'm reading on Subject Matter. Before there were "The Midnight Eye Guide to Japanese Film" (Tom Mes & Jasper Sharp), "Agitator" (Tom Mes) and "Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film" (Chris D).

Don is revealing [url?http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/forums/showth ... 37&page=51]more Nikkatsu pink titles[/url]. The highlights include Naosuke Kurosawa's Zoom In: Rape Apartment, which is a pretty stunning pink giallo with amazing cinematography and audio design, and Sex Hunter: Wet Target, which I think was more or less based on the same screenplay as Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter, and directed by Yukihiro Sawada, who did one of the best cop movies of the 70's; Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland. Synapse is also going to release Tatsumi Kumashiro's Lovers Are Wet, which no. 69 on Kinema Junpo's top 100 Japanese movies of all time list.

Synapse titles revealed so far:

Lovers Are Wet (恋人たちは濡れた, 1973) (Tatsumi Kumashiro) (my mini review here)

Zoom up: Beaver Book Girl (ズームアップ ビニール本の女, probably, 1981) (Takashi Sugano)
Sex Hunter: Wet Target (セックス・ハンター 濡れた標的, 1972)(Yukihiro Sawada)
Fairy in a Cage (檻の中の妖精, 1977) (Koyu Ohara) (DVD Debut)
Rape! (犯す!, 1976) (Yasuharu Hasebe) (DVD Debut)
Rape Shot: Momoe's Lip (レイプショット 百恵の唇, 1979) (Katsuhiko Fujii)
True Story of Woman in Jail: Sex Hell (実録おんな鑑別所 性地獄, 1975) (Koyu Ohara) (DVD Debut)
True Story of Woman in Jail Continues (続実録おんな鑑別所, 1975) (Koyu Ohara) (DVD Debut)
Woman in Heat Behind Bars (檻の中の欲しがる女たち, 1987) (Junichi Suzuki) (DVD Debut)
Female Gymnastics Instructor: Jump and Straddle (女体育教師 跳んで開いて, 1981) (Koyu Ohara)
Nurse Diary: Wicked Finger (看護婦日記 いたずらな指, 1979) (Shinichi Shiratori)
Nurse Diary: Beastly Afternoon (看護婦日記 獣じみた午後, 1982) (Naosuke Kurosawa)
Hunting Female Teacher (女教師狩り, 1982) (Junichi Suzuki)
Female Teacher: In Front of the Students (女教師 生徒の眼の前で, 1982) (Yasuaki Uegaki)
Female Teacher: Dirty Afternoon (女教師 汚れた放課後, 1981) (Kichitaro Negishi)
I Like it From Behind (バックが大好き, 1981) (Koyu Ohara)
Story of White Coat: Indecent Acts (????)
Eros School (????)
Pearl Diver: Tight Shellfish (????)
She Cat (????)

There should still be a few more titles remaining.

Heh, reminded me of Sexy Battle Girls and its 18 year old (according to Pink Eiga's subtitles) protagonist. But in the dialogue she actually says she's 14.

The actress was in her 20's.

Oh, and more Nikkatsu news. Kino / Kimstim are releasing Kumashiro films: the technically interesting but over-rated Ichijo Sayuri (my mini review), which is yet another film on Kinema Junpo's top 100 list, the rather good Yakuza Goddess: Lust and Honor (my mini review) - which features an ultra violent Taxi Driver finale, and a killer ending shot - and, strangly, Lovers Are Wet. There must be some mistake, cause that film is also on Synapse's list.

Wild Side has HQ cover arts and info for the first three titles on their website.
http://www.wildside.fr/video/collection,9

The running times, assuming both Wild Side and IMDB are correct, would seem a bit worrisome. They are the same, but with France being a PAL country their shouldn't be.

Notice that Wild Side claims some of the discs have DTS 5.1. Wait and see...

I've seen one of the films, Hell Fated Courtesan. It's an arthouse pink by Tanaka. Loved by critics, but not me.

As for the other two, The Woman with Pierced Nipples is a Shogoro Nishimura film. I used to think the guy is a hack, but I've since come realize most Nikkatsu directors are worse. That doesn't make Nishimura good, but his films do tend to have a little bit of kick.

Dark Room is kinda interesting for being 122 min. That's an exceptional length for a pink film, and a likely indication of ambition. That doesn't necessarily translate as quality, but it is usually a sign that they are trying to do something different. This film was apparently made to celebrate the studio's 70 years in business.

You can buy it from amazon for 39 980 yen. Yeah, I told you these are oop.

edit: Hold ya fucking horses, those overpriced discs ain't gonna be selling for long. Ushiro kara, mae kara will be re-released by Geneon June 25th, with a low price tag of ¥2890. Pink Hip Girl, Pinku Curtain, and a few others will hit the streets the same day. No doubt more will follow.

This kinda gives me some hope. Ever since Geneon stopped releasing more Nikkatsu catalogue titles I was under the impression that they had given up on the genre and were cutting their losses. With these re-releases (which of course indicate that the first pressings did sell out) and the copious amounts of these remasters getting licensed in France, the US and a handful even in Germany, maybe they will eventually consider putting out a couple more batches. There are simply too many great films that should not be consigned to unavailability or VHS rip country.

In other news, the trailers for the 3 Yuuji Makiguchi (Rashamen, Virgin Breaker Yuki 1&2) films Toei is releasing this month can currently be viewed at Toei's trailer page:

http://www.toei-video.co.jp/trailer/index.html

As I said before, I'm most curious about Rashamen and the trailer maddeningly still doesn't really tell me any more about what the film is about or like. It's mostly just pans across gory and sexually explicit ukiyo-e paintings with accompanying narration. I'm kinda bummed that Toei haven't announced the remainder of Makiguchi's filmography for any of the coming months. Yes, greed is a terrible thing.

In our series "fuck me, when did this come out?" (answer: today): Rape Hunter: Target Woman (Rape Hunter: Nerawareta Onna) (レイプハンター 狙われた女) (1980)

This film was directed by Nikkatsu's action film specialist Yukihiro Sawada (Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland) and features quest appearance by none other than Yusaku Matsuda.

So how on earth did a Nikkatsu Roman film come out all of a sudden? Geneon stopped releasing them a few years ago already. Well, by the time they started going oop, Happinet started re-issuing them. But no one told me they were also adding new titles to the DVD catalogue...

A handful of other Nikkatsu titles, such as Morning of Ecstasy (Kōkotsu no asa) (恍惚の朝) (1972), have come out, too. Yasuharu Hasebe's Secret Honeymoon: Rape Train (Maruhi Honeymoon: Boko Ressha) ((秘)ハネムーン 暴行列車) (1977), and Shinichi Shiratori's Toruko buro maruhi gaiden: nisō gokuraku (トルコ風呂(秘)外伝 尼僧極楽) (1975) are among the titles set for future release:

You can also keep Happinet's catalogue site on eye. You can recognize the new titles easily. The re-issues are priced at 2800 yen, while the DVD debuts are 3800 yen:

That's awesome work!

I've seen Shinjuku midare machi (without subs) and it's a rather good one by Chusei Sone. An easy going 70's time capsule / youth film, with sex, booze and rock n' roll. Could've easily been a mainstream release. Actually I'd rate it higher than some of ATG's productions or Tatsumi Kumashiro's Nikkatsu films.

Oh, and you've got some Nikkatsu action films there too. Very cool! I might watch them with your subs!

Whoaaa! The Evergreen Roman Porno retro comes to my hometown! Get to see Love Hotel and Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland on 35mm!! (though I own both on dvd). Plus unreleased-on-dvd gems like Rape and Death of a Housewife (Noboru Tanaka) and Chusei Sone's Hakuchu no onna gari which is supposed to be an ultra-violent survival game (promotional material below). In addition there's 10 other movies, some that I haven't seen, some that I have (Kumashiro, Konuma, more Tanaka etc.)

On the Pinku front, I noticed that Amazon (US) has a bunch of Nikkatsu Roman Porno early 80s films for sale now, put out by Impulse Pictures under the "Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection" header. Anyone check these out yet? Apologies if this is covered in another thread. Here are the ones I could find (links to Amazon page):

avmaniacs users have been covering these:
http://www.avmaniacs.com/forums/showthr ... 534&page=1

Zoom In: Sex Apartments (aka Rape Apartments) is a small gem; a pink giallo of jaw dropping audio-visual brialliacy, got it on R2J. Sex Hunter: Wet Target appears interesting too, a revenge/action pink directected by Yukihiro Sawada whose police corruption thriller Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland is among great discoveries of Nikkatsu pseudo pink cinema.

I haven't been following pink releases much recently, rather the opposite, I just had my friend visit my FI home and box the pinkus before I come for a visit with the kanojo during the holidays. No need to traumatize the poor thing - yet

I did slip into the theater to catch a few of the Evergreen Roman Porno retro screenings on 35mm, though a badly timed cold and astronomical ticket prices had me stay home most of the time.

* and yes, I know roman porno isn't technically pink cinema, but give me a rest you purists out there, it's too much to ask to separate Japanese skin flicks into a dozen different categories referred with different terms. Can't we just do with three or four terms? Hell, half of my Japanese friends have never heard the term "pinku eiga" (pink film)... I have to explain it to them every time.
