They do look quite different.

Both are interlaced.

Well Go has more image on all four sides and more natural colours, but the contrast is too high.

Why would you say that? The contrast levels are fine and the r3hk clearly has higher contrast. :?

Thanks for the screens. What languages are included in the R1?

One is letterbox, the other not. An easy choice.

p.s - As Shingster says the HK DVD has off contrast.

Maybe contrast isn't the right term then?

But the Well Go looks a bit faded, blacks are a bit grey.

Not saying I like the IVL, just that it looks more striking.

Yeah it's the opposite of what you mean Mark, the r3hk has high contrast, WAY too high, whereas the r1's contrast is a touch too low - BUT on a properly calibrated screen it should look pretty good, not unlike how it appeared in theatres.

OK. I knew there was something not right... lol

I'm far from the best at describing what I see in images.

The colours look a lot more natural on the R1, I'm used to the bright colours on the R3 though.

you'd take bright colours over an anamorphic presentation :?

Brad is right, it isnt what I meant. They look very different, I'm just used to the R3 colour scheme with brighter colours. However, anamorphic wins.
Shame the R1 has no extras though, I like Bey's commentary.

Interesting colour differences. I'm rather attracted to the blue on the 2nd one down :).

Not a fan of the contrast on either if I'm honest.

This is the thing: Celestial performed two restorations:

1st) PAL non-anamorphic slightly zoom-boxed with higher contrast, but likely with no frame-cuts or other little edits.

2nd) HD PAL (D5 master) that's not as cropped with better handling, but most likely frame-cut (and other little edits) because of laziness - cutting corners in repairing them (or just didn't because they didn't deem it worthy to keep for reasons of TV-broadcast length or something).

I wish companies like WellGoUSA and and Image Entertainment would leave these the fuck alone because unless they know what they're doing, Celestial are going to be shoving crap up their arse. Potentially decent presentations ruined.

WellGoUSA is using the 2nd restoration, but it's whether it's PAL>NTSC from there, or genuine NTSC (but interlaced). Salty, which one of the two is it :)? Can you give us a few more details (mono, subtitle quality)?

Thanks!

I may double dip, thanks Salty :) Do you have the R1?
I hope the subs are the same ones as the R3 but cleaned up (Come Drink With Me had a different set of subs on the R1 compared to the R3 which annoyed me).

I like the black levels on the IVL DVD, even though the contrast isn't as good.

BTW Salty, Celestial didn't release this, IVL did ;).

oldeschool: at the top of the page, you'll see 'Your Images'. You can upload the PAL captures (set at 'weave') :).

Thanks Chen,
So are the images automatically gonna be resized to 768x576 or is that something I'm gonna have to do?

What a pompous and ridiculous thing to say.

Grim didn't take it that way, why would he? There is nothing in the slightest bit patronising or condescending in what I said. Stop talking bollocks, obviously Grim is capable of articulating himself (he's an intelligent chap). I never said or implied anything of the sort.

You were the dumbass for thinking Grim would ever say he'd prefer a non-anamorphic DVD over an anamorphic one. Feeling a little stupid are we? :D.

Was such a comment really necessary?

there is you fucking prick.just today you've tried to be a dick with him over the ETD blu-ray.which is ironic as over the years you've proved yourself the thickest cunt on these boards,a view there won't be many disagreeing with.

I'm not the one swearing to high heaven and starting pointless arguments ;). Personally I have better things to be doing, than getting all irate over an Internet Forum 8).

These discs are NTSC and started by another user, so I don't know.

However, I say put the PAL ones up at 768x576 if you wish :).
