I'll take the R2J, though it's interesting that you can see more in the R2UK, even in bright shots. It will be interesting to see what the R4 is like.

The R2J is supposed to have english subs. The R3K apparently doesn't have eng subs.

Yes, you're right, the copy I have is custom but it's an added DD5.1 track from the HK release - not subs.

The R1, R2UK, R2J, R3HK and R4AU all have English subs. Only the R3HK and R4AU have DD5.1 though. All are anamorphic.
Can you please post the time codes? I've not seen Kairo for years. Unless you want to do it Eva?

Oh do you have the R4 as well? The caps are from three points in the film which are easy to find and the sub sample is the first line spoken.

Cheers for the caps Eva.
Still the R2J for me though.

R2J definitely looks the best but the difference is not large enough to warrant the expense of the R2J (especially considering that it's missing the 5.1 mix). I'll stick with my R4.

Personally I like the R4 most. The UK R2 is too bright and the R2J too dark (but not much). The R4 looks the best plus look at the clarity in the hand shot on the R4, clearly better.
The R4 as Eva points out also has the crucial 5.1 too.

whoa, the R2J has such an incredibly ugly subtitle font that I had to stop after 8 minutes. Gonna do a custom version now and try to get the film watched later tonight (already 0:15)... lets see how fast I can do this.
gonna edit this with a sub cap later...
powerdvd caps, ignore pq

Yes sorry, I took my caps from a copy with the subs corrected. I didn't think that the font would have been changed.
Replaced my cap with yours.

No problem. I didn't buy the R2J because of the subtitle font on your cap (in fact bought it before this comparison).

As if I'd care if you had.

Bastard. I wrote two nice sentences to make sure you won't feel bad about it

Wasn't there a scene edited on some versions?
I think I remembered something about the plane crash appearing without sound on some releases, bit of a hysterical alteration made after 9/11.
It's intact on the HK-disc.

I heard about that too but I think it's a rumour that wasn't actually true. As you say it's on the HK DVD and I think others.

It's not a rumour, it's true and it's exactly the opposite of what tolpol says. I own both the HK and JP discs and there is NO sound on the HK disc, the JP disc however DOES have the sound like it's supposed to be. Actually I prefer it without sound, I think it makes the scene even more creepy, otherwordly...
