The "where are you all from" thread?

Post by bradavon »

I thought it was about time we all said where we were from.

I don't just mean the country but also the town and it's location. If you live in a different country than where you were from originally by all means post both.

Let me start:

Europe
England
South West

A poll would be fun too.

Any excuse to put some colours into this blueish and gray forum.
+ I think it's fun. Now you can look at a map and say:
"-Hey, this is where the weird cat-loving french maniac lives !" :D

22 States (we call them regions).
102 Counties.

I even know the zip codes to about 90% of the counties. Every schoolkid knows them. 8)

Don't they teach you that stuff in grammar school ?

I always thought a state was the same thing as a county. They also call them counties in Ireland.

I've no idea therefore how many states we have. I don't think we even have states in that sense, just counties. We would say:

South West, South East (which is broken up again into the London area), North West, North East and Midlands but that doesn't really count.

Do they have counties in the USA?

Grammar school died long before I was born or mostly anyway. There are a few left and no btw we don't learn it, weird I know. Why bother to learn the zip/post codes? What real use do they have? (to know them all).

I don't know anyone who knows how many counties we have. I couldn't even guess at the number.

Why bother to learn the zip/post codes?
Good question.

Zip codes are more meaningful in France than they are in Britain I guess.
-For example, I have drawn a huge "13" (my zip code) on my car.
-When I'm in the North and people ask me where I come from, I just say "I come from the 13". :D
-In our region we have learned to avoid people who come from the 75 (Paris).

Zip codes are more commonly used than the names of the different states.

Yep only our postal service give a shit about them.

Where are you form? BA15 2RP , madness :D . It wouldn't mean anything.

That said we don't have a state/county code such as London, it's much more broken down than that. The county I live in (Wiltshire) has at least 5.

I still don't get the point Tom old bean. Saying "Allauch, 10kms north of Marseille" has to have more meaning than thirteen. Shirly?!?

You mean Alkmaar is where cheese is made, or does it actually mean "City of Cheese" in Dutch? :D

(Must resist making a bad "What cheese is made backwards...?" gag) ;)

No, it doesn't literally mean 'city of cheese', but it has a long history of making cheese or something, and we have a classic ritual once a week or something where 2 doofbags in some stupid clothing go and carry big plates of cheese, run around a bit, all for the tourists, you know!? ;)
Never seen it myself though...

I don't get the backwards cheese-making joke, btw... ;)

Once a week and you've never seen it?

Cheese seems to be all over Holland. There were cheese touristy things near Eindhovan when I visited there in 2003 too.

Brad, the joke is in the "made". Since I say the question without putting any stress on the word "made" you are fooled into believing I mean "manufactured" - when I mean the actual word "made" written backwards.

"made" backwards = EDAM.
