Re: Martial arts and Fighters
It's time for UFC 133. August 6, 2011.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_133
I'm going to introduce some fighters and try to predict some matches.
The main fight of the night is "Sugar" Rashad Evans vs Tito Ortiz. Tito is coming of a win after a five fight loss streak so this fight is really important for him. Ortiz has a very aggressive style but Evans won his last fight against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson who also has a aggressive style and more skill than Ortiz. The result will be TKO for Rashad. I hate Tito as a person and hope his career ends next saturday. One interesting point about the fight is that Rashad has changed his trainer/gym so lets see if it affects anything.
The next fight I'm going to write about is Vitor Belfort vs Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama. Vitor has very heavy hands so it will be interesting to see if Akiyama can stand with him. I hope Akiyama wins but from what I've seen I must say this one will end Decision win for Belfort.
Preview of this fight.

The last fight I'm going to write about has some nordic flavor when Alexander Gustafsson fights against Matt Hamill. Hamill is the best wrestler Gustafsson has ever faced so Gustafsson will need to have a good takedown defence. I'm rooting for the deaf Matt Hamill and I predict it will end Decision Hamill.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
Well this time my predictions weren't that accurate. Only the Main fight played out the way I thought it would.
Here is the full fight in poor quality video. It will be taken down from youtube in a matter of days though so if you really want to see the fight just write UFC 133 to any torrent search engine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WgTApIwmwE
Evans was clearly better the whole fight and the finishing knee was spectacular.
Vitor vs Akiyama with Brazilian commentators.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3McO0ZZOE4Q
Many people have criticized Akiyama for abandoning his judo roots and standing and banging with clearly better strikers. That night Akiyama did just that and got knocked out cold during the first round. One less Japanese guy in the UFC now.
Didn't find a video of Hamill vs Gustafsson. Gustafsson moved a lot and was clearly outpunching Hamill. Hamill tried a few takedowns but Gustafsson defended them all and TKO'd Hamill in the second round. I was very impressed by Gustafsson's performance.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
The black belt advancement in Judo can be quite difficult since the Kōdōkan instutute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodokan) can deny you of any advancement if they don't like to look of your face. Satoshi Ishii is a good example of this. He has won the Japanese championship in judo two times and he is a Olympic gold medalist in Judo (+100kg division) but because he's training MMA now he has been expelled from the Japanese Judo union. This is why the judo players that come from Japan can never be the best fighters in the world. Their discipline forbids them to learn any other martial art.
My next post is going to cover my favorite sport in the world which is MMA (mixed martial arts).

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
MMA (mixed martial arts) has always been around from the time of the anchient Greeks with their Pankration to the early 20th century Brazil with Vale tudo. Modern MMA was born in the USA and Japan. At first there were very little rules and the sport was really brutal but nowadays there are 31 rules which makes the sport more competitor friendly. The small number of rules means one can use almost any kind of kick, punch, takedown or submission they can think of and this means every fighter will have an individual fighting style. Modern MMA is such a young sport that the level of competition goes up all the time and the fighters 10 years ago couldn't compete with the fighters of today. Also the level of fitness you have to have to compete at the highest level is very high.
Naming some famous MMA fighter is very difficult for me since there are so many who I respect. The fact is that I respect anyone (as a fighter) who is tough enough to get in the ring or octagon and give his/her all in a fight against another person. Of course there are those dudes who have become legends outside of the ring like Bas Rutten, Randy Couture, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Chuck Liddell etc. As a fighter my two favorites atm. are Georges St-Pierre and Junior Dos Santos.
Here you can see how fighters train for upcoming fights.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdjiknyoxgs
More training.

You guessed more training.

If you want to see more MMA just check out the different organizations that host the sport. These include UFC (the biggest and the best), Strikeforce (owned by UFC), Dream (Japanese oranization) and Pride. Pride is a former Japanese organization that's now gone but the fights can still be found in internet land. Pride was somewhat more brutal than modern UFC since you could headkick/stomp a grounded opponent.
Lastly my own opinion about the martial art. I think MMA is the best martial art on the planet right now simply because it's the only martial art that incorperates all aspects of fighting. The level of conditioning, competing and training is way above any other martial art. That's why I'm hopefully going to start training this sport in a local club next month. Now all of you who don't like my brash writing style on this forum can wish that I get a permanent brain injury and become a slobbering vegetable. Atleast I will be a ripped vegetable.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
Forgot to post the compulsory Human Weapon clips.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA7HmpxaWwg
The "pussy" hosts of Human Weapon didn't fight any top level guys in the end. This was not the case in Kill Arman where the host Arman fought against current UFC top fighter Martin Kampmann for one 5 min round. Normally a match would end if a combatant tapped out but in this mock battle the round will continue standing up. Kampmann is being quite gentile. The sound is of sync by a few seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC6aHj8C ... age#t=181s
If you watch this and think you can do better keep in mind the fact that Arman has been doing martial arts for a few years now and is quite fit.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
No sleep for fight fans next night.
First we have a huge boxing event in Erfurt, Germany (21:00 - 23:00 CET). The main fight is a heavyweight fight between Aleksandr Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev. The fight before that is even more interesting for us Finns because it's a heavyweight match between Finnish boxing superstar Robert Helenius and the Belarussian Sergei Liakhovich.
I predict the winners are Povetkin and Helenius.
Then after that we have a UFC event in Rio de Janeiro. UFC 134 (starts 03:00 CET) and features many fights that can be good.
The main fight is a middleweight match for the UFC title. Anderson Silva of Brazil is defending his title against a Japanese fighter Yushin Okami.
The second very interesting fight is between Maurício "Shogun" Rua who is a real savage when it comes to beating people. His opponent is Forrest Griffin who has once defeted Shogun in a previous fight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bexMQBlXph4 Some hype for this fight.
I predict that both wins will go to Brazil.

All my predictions were right.
Round 9 of Helenius fight.

2nd round of the Silva vs Okami fight.
http://vimeo.com/28258855
Okami got fucking dominated. Silva is so good that he makes good fighters seem like they're terrible.
Shogun vs Griffin with Brazilian commentators. No chance for Griffin.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
Just caught the Povetkin and Helenius fights on YouTube and I can't see the former worrying the Klitschko brothers any time soon tbh, Povetkin's not all that disimilar to Chagaev in terms of build/height and hand speed but he showed greater versatility in his punching angles and he has good body/head movement, but at the end of the day Wlad Klitschko's height and jab was an unsurmountable wall for Chageav in their fight and I'd expect the same should Povetkin get a shot.
Helenius I think has greater potential to be a Klitschko beater; he's big, strong, and throws thundering combinations, but he seriously needs to work on his footwork and aggression in the eary rounds. I could be barking up the wrong tree here as this was the first fight of his I've watched, but he seems like the type of fighter who likes to take it slow and assert his power in the later rounds looking for that explosive knockout, which imo will only get him so far in this division.

I agree with you. That night I saw my first full Povetkin fight and he still has a long way to go if he wants to challenge the Klitschkos. Helenius was OK, didn't like the way he brawled. His former fights have been more technical with good distance control.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
Well well, time for another martial arts related post. Haven't have had much time think up these since uni started again in the beginning of September and I've also started doing BJJ/MMA in a local club. This time we have a UFC event in lovely Denver, Colorado. It's UFC 135 (Jones vs Rampage) and it takes place tomorrow September 24, 2011. The main fight is a title fight over the UFC light heavyweight (205 ib) belt.
I'll try to predict some fight as I've done before.
The main fight is Jon Jones vs Quinton Jackson. Jones is the reigning champion and has never been in trouble in the cage. His only loss is because he was disqualified because he used an illegal downward elbow to knock a guy out. He was dominating that match as well. Jon "Bones" Jones is like a bigger version of Anderson Silva. Incredible striking and Jiu-Jitsu. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is a MMA veteran who has fought in all the big fights. He's got a very powerful punch and he's primarily a striker.
I'm giving this one for Jones. I can see rampage winning if he happens to catch Bones with a good one but bones has such good movement and counterpunches that I doubt rampage can hit him that hard.
The next match I write about is Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck. This one will be fun because both of these guys have a very strong wrestling background. I think Koscheck has a more natural stand-up. Both players have had a long layoff since their last fight and it will be interesting to see if they have any ring rust.
I give this to Matt because I don't like the big mouth of Josh. I hope Matt puts him out.
The last fight I'm going to write about is Travis Browne vs. Rob Broughton. Now you Brits on this forum have somebody to cheer for. Too bad he will most likely lose. The record for Europeans going against the UFC guys is a very sad read. The English have produced some fighters that can hang with the best but the rest of Europe apart from the Netherlands and Russia is a fucking disgrace.
I'll give this one to Browne. I don't know anything about the Englishman but I know Travis hits like a truck. KO in the first round.

Re: Martial arts and Fighters
UFC 139 is upon us and the main card looks fantastic. I'm again going to try to predict the three main fights.
Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles
I think Faber will win this with his superior Grappling. Bowles has a sick guillotine choke that Faber has to avoid. Prediction: Decision Faber.
Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le
If Silva was the man he was some five years ago this would be a easy choice but the fact of the matter is he has been in so many wars and there is only so much punishment the human body can take. Silva will come out guns blazing but Cung's superior footwork will keep him safe. Prediction: Le KO win second round.
Maurício Rua vs. Dan Henderson
Very though match to call. Henderson has never been Knocked out during his +15 years carrier but Rua hits and especially kicks harder than most fighters out there. Henderson will win if he can land his famous overhand right but if this fight goes the distance Shogun's fancy Muay Thai will prove to be a valuable asset. Prediction: Shogun will be the first man to KO Henderson (2nd round)
