The pope is a moron, worshipped by an army of morons. Not just because of what he says about aids, but about the whole religious thing, where he dresses up in a dress and some weird headgear and pretends he's the chosen one...

Really? His views are common in Roman Catholic circles.

I'd disagree what he says is entirely moronic, it certainly is in this area. What he says about people being saving sex before marriage is so grossly unrealistic it's dangerous.

If it is true that condoms "only" reduce the risks by 90%, then I agree with the pope. To hell with condoms! Go abstinence!

But honestly I'm not entirely convinced.
I think condoms reduce the risks by much more than 90%, and it is therefore quite safe to use them.

You misunderstand what it says (not the pope too btw). It says "consistent and correct" use reduces the risk by 90%, not condems themselves reduce getting HIV by 90%, which I believe is closer to 98%/99%.

"Consistent and correct use reduces risk by 90%", but compared to what?
-not using a condom at all?
-using a condom inconsistently and in the wrong manner?

If it's the second one, then I guess you're right.
But that's not how I read it.

This is what the HIV article on Wikipedia says:

The correct and consistent use of latex condoms reduces the risk of sexual transmission of HIV by about 85%.

Anyway, it's true that condoms don't make sex 100% safe.
But to say that they're making things worse is a bit of a stretch.

I believe he means, compared to abstinence. Which if everyone followed it, obviously it would be safer but that's never going to happen. I also took it to mean that using condoms encourages sex out of marriage.

I took it to also mean, that you think you're safe so have more sex. Does anyone really think they're 100% safe? I guess so.
