Well what did you expect me to say, good sir? Should I have gone into detail that it looks just like another cheap-o z-grade teen horror flick with sub-par special effects and zero originality?

Looks very different from the comic splatter of the original... more akin to modern torture porn and thus about as much fun as a kick in the balls.

Well at least they didnt skimp on the gore - trailer plays on tension and scares, but lacks the slapstick FUN the original also had.

Looks ok to me....it'll no doubt be a no brainer gory horror that'll pass 90 minutes easily enough. How can anyone tell there's sub-par special effects from the trailer lol..and Mark it's a horror movie about daft teenagers getting nasty things done to them...don't quite get the torture porn angle?

I'm thinking about the look and tone of the film (and the vibe) as much as the graphic content. I could be wrong...saltysam wrote:and Mark it's a horror movie about daft teenagers getting nasty things done to them...don't quite get the torture porn angle?

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
There's this very weird revisionism going on these days regarding the original Evil Dead that I feel can only be put down to the comedic sequels and Raimi's frequently light-hearted subsequent career, but make no mistake, when the original film was first made and released back in the late 70s/early 80s it was NOT intended to be even remotely comic, and it was marketed and received as a pretty intense splatter pic. In fact, throughout most of the 80s it was considered a pretty hardcore horror, which is why it made it onto the Video Nasties list. I certainly have no early memories of people treating it as a semi-facetious "fun" flick! That was always Evil Dead 2.
Of course, Evil Dead is now a fun film, with lots of unintentional humour (one of my all time fave beer & pizza movies alongside The Thing), but I think Raimi is trying to bring the franchise back to its original horror routes if that trailer is anything to go by. The problem is that ED1 was very much a lightining in a bottle moment, the genre's so much shit now that I don't see how anyone can recapture the original's combination of fresh but raw & naive filmmaking and explicit gore. I really don't know what you can do to elevate the genre to a new level, so imo the trailer just comes across as bland.
I could be completely wrong though, Sam & Ivan may not be taking it back to its routes and instead are sticking to their usual horror-slapstick tone, so there's always the possibility that it will be a lot more jokey than that first trailer suggests.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
Shing's right about Evil Dead 1 not being comic... though I think he's forgetting there's indeed various small bits of black humor in it. Well, as far as I can remember at least. Time to rewatch, I guess.
The trailer does not look entirely bad. Some of the visuals seem promising.
Xenon's reaction doesn't seem to be based on the trailer footage at all. Where do you see sub-par special effects in it?
But yeah, I'm a bit worried this will become a human torture porn film. The original was a monster movie where people usually turned into demons before the splatter, but new the trailer suggests more emphasis on trendy human torture. But then, it's just a trailer. Let's see when the film opens.
In any case, I'd rather see Evil Dead turned into a vicious torture porn than have it star Miley Cyrus and some random black dude

There's comedy in it, but it was unintentional. I know Campbell's gone on the record about that and Raimi may have as well (One of them talk about it in an interview in the The Evil Dead Companion, but it's been many years since I read it. Campbell has subsequently reiterated the same point in a more recent interview).HungFist wrote:Shing's right about Evil Dead 1 not being comic... though I think he's forgetting there's indeed various small bits of black humor in it. Re: Evil Dead..the remake
I tried to watch Evil Dead 2 on TV recently but it just annoyed the hell out of me, had to turn it off after 20 minutes of Bruce Campbell spazzing out in sped up motion and monsters making stupid noises. And the beginning didn't seem to make sense.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
The sped up motion stuff can be irritating and disorienting I agree.
I'm trying to remember but some shots/motion reminded me of A Chinese Ghost Story?
Why doesnt the beginning make sense? Isnt it just a recap of the original and how they got there?
Still enjoyed the film though. I have the 25th Anniversary BD but not seen it yet.

The problem was they couldn't decide whether ED2 was a sequel or a bigger budget remake.gasteropod wrote:Errr, I think I just didn't understand why he was back at the cabin.
If it's a sequel the setup doesn't make much sense (as Gas says) so better to think of it as a new version of the same story with Campbell as 'Ash' from another cinematic dimension. Same character... yet not.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
The filmmakers knew exactly what ED2 was, it was the studio that didn't really want them to make a straight out sequel and so imposed the stupid retcon/rehash of how Ash ended up in the cabin. They were also obligated to deliver an R-rating this time round so that neutered them on how much gore could be shown (hence the reason you've got gallons of green or white slime and ooze, but no fountains of blood), so they probably found it easier to fall back on slapstick rather than go all out for horror. Raimi & Campbell where afterall huge slapstick fans, they never really paid any attention at all to horror films until they decided to make one, it really was never their area of expertise.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
I think the MPAA still rated ED2 NC17/X despite the green/black blood didnt they? Raimi and Bruce confirm this on the commentary that Dino De Laurentis' company couldnt release it in that form so they just made up a new company

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
Yeah the first Evil Dead was released theatrically unrated and was a success, and I suspect after that the MPAA had a bee in their bonnet when it came to the Evil Dead films for years, which was only further exacerbated by what they did with ED2. Giving Raimi's original cut of Army of Darkness a NC-17 has to be the most blatantly biased and utterly ludicrous ratings the MPAA has ever made, IIRC their official reason for the rating was the geyser of blood that shoots out of Deadite pit at the start of the film.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
Thats a ridiculous rating, Army of Darkness is even more comedic and lighter in tone than ED2, IMO.

Re: Evil Dead..the remake
That was the rating they were expecting and Universal were demanding! Everyone involved with the film were pretty confident they'd put together a PG-13 film and it gets hit with a NC-17, thus forcing Raimi to make edits, and when that re-edited version was hit with an R-rating Universal decided to edit the film themselves, which was how the bastardized Theatrical Cut came about. We're probably stuck with the shitty shortened version for good now (DVD releases excluded).

Evil Dead [2013] - First Cut Receives NC-17 Rating
Cuts Will be Made to Secure R Rating For Cinemas
- http://www.movie-censorship.com/news_en.php?ID=4851
I guess the same R-rated cut will be shown in other countries as well, in order not to make the Americans jealous. Rating wise it wouldn't matter, I think, because the film will receive the 18 / highest classifiction in all other countries anyway.

Isnt that an excuse to release an extended/unrated DVD/BD however? I'm sure thats what will happen?
