The Shinjuku Incident - Jackie Chan

Post by thelostdragon »

Some of you might have heard of it before.

Directed by Derek Yee (Protégé, One Nite in Mongkok, Lost in Time, Full Throttle), this is supposed to be a Yakuza-Thriller-Drama with Jackie Chan, Ken Watanabe and Daniel Wu in the lead. It is supposed to have no typical JC action in it and to totally focus on Jackie Chan's character immigrating to Tokyo, Japan and getting involved with the Yakuza.

I hope this is a giant success.

Then we'll hopefully see Jackie move away from his tired schtick into a more mature style of film.

I agree with Mark. It would be nice seeing Jackie doing something decent againfor a change.

But it wouldnt surprise me that halfway through the project Jackie takes direction into his own hands again, demands final cut and some re-shoots, and changes the whole movie into a Jackie movie.

I hope that you don't mean "New Police Story" mature.

This is older news, but it tells something more about the story of the movie.

Beware, spoilers might be contained!

Derek Yee can always be trusted (Protégé is his weakest in recent years but still turned out quite good). Diggit! :)

As you might have already heard, the postponed HK-theater release of the 3. April 09 has been confirmed by EMP. The movie will not be shown in Mainland China.

Finally, here is a first trailer for the movie, the plot-outline and many many photos:

trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oUlZfELm-E

In the early 1990s, a mainland Chinese tractor mechanic nicknamed Steelhead (Jackie Chan) enters Japan illegally, in search of his girlfriend Xiu Xiu (Xu Jinglei). Steelhead and his friend, Jie (Daniel Wu) meet in the busy Shinjuku district and take manual labouring jobs to earn money. When Steelhead finds out that Xiu Xiu has married a Japanese Yakuza leader named Eguchi, he decides to remain in Japan. To obtain citizenship, he agrees to work for Eguchi as a killer, but quickly becomes used to the power. Soon he has become embroiled so deeply in the ways of the yakuza that there is no turning back!

Heavy stuff indeed! It has been stated in many press reports that the genre of the film will be closer to drama than Chan’s trademark action. Shinjuku Director Derek Yee reportedly said, “People are too familiar with the image of a fighting Jackie Chan. It’s time for him to move on to drama.” In a recent interview, Jackie himself describes the film as, “maybe one per cent action. 99% Heavy drama.”

Fan Bing Bing - GRRRR! :D
Crime Story was a more serious film I think - but even that had some "Jackie" parts in it.

They guy's got great sense of humour, too.

In Viva Erotica there's a character called Derek Yee (played by Lau Ching Wan), an art film director who gets so upset about his latest film being a commercial flop that he commits suicide. After his death, everyone rushes to see the movie.
